Norton 2005 problem

When I click on the "Live Update" button on Norton 2005, I get an error stating that it is unable to connect to my ISP. I have to manually update NAV through their website.

Live Update has worked up until I put a broadband router on my computer - would that have anything to do with NAV not connecting? Everything else seems to update except NAV.

    Any ideas?

The router wouldn't, but possibly your Firewall would.

Is there a firewall in the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router? If so, why does it only have a problem with Norton and nothing else? And how can I get it to allow Norton?

If it isn't the router, has anyone else had this problem?

I should add that I've had a firewall and the nortonav installed for years and I didn't have this problem before.

Does your router have built-in config pages? If so, you might wanna see if it has logging of any sort, and try to determine if NAV has been blocked.

    Hi,

The router does have a firewall/antivirus in it (It's a Linksys WRT54g v.4), at least that's what the tech support guy from Linksys told me. I wasn't able to get him to tell me which fw/av was in it. All he told me was that in order for me to run Live Update I'd have to unplug the router and hook back up into the modem.

This doesn't seem right to me. Does anyone know how I can find config pages, if there are any to be found?

Maybe if I tried out a different Antivirus program? My Norton will expire in early January so it's not a big deal to make a switch now if I had to.

    Joy

I've tried the support offered on the Symantec site but I couldn't complete it. When it was time for me to delete the corrupted files the computer would not allow it because I was using the files.

I think my router is using Norton Antivirus. My concern is whether it's updating and keeping current. The Linksys tech could not tell me if it had the ability to do so or not.

I think it's time for another call to Linksys, and possibly ask for a higher tier tech.

The WRT54G does not have a A/V on it, it does have Firewall abilities. If you are having problems with Live Update, may want to check to make sure that you do not have a Proxy set up in it. Also, your ISP, did they have you run a set up CD when you first connected (in reality, you do not need to run the CD to get online). The software installed by the ISP CD if installed can cause problems connecting also.

How do I check to make sure I do not have a Proxy set up on it?

I really don't think my ISP (ameritech dsl) CD would be a factor because I didn't have any problems with the Live Update until I connected with that router. It's been 3y+ since I ran the CD and had Norton AV on this system together.

What modem do you have? I always had problems with LU after I upgraded to 2k5 NIS, and ended up going with a approach of using other products to protect my systems, due to I had too many problems with Norton products (overhead, system lockups).

I have a SpeedStream 5100 modem. What kind of AV do you use? I was thinking about going with AVG.

I use AVG on my laptop, and Avast on the Desktop. Also with your 5100, are you doing PPPoE with it, or the Router?

Not sure - I have a CAT5 connecting the router and the modem. The computer is hooked up to the router.

In your router configuration, there is a tab for access restrictions. You can check this to see if Norton is in the listing for blocked services.

I think we are using PPPoE - I can't find where the router configuration is located on the computer. There isn't a folder for it under "all programs".

    I can't find the router configuration/folder.

OK I found how to access the router configuration on the internet. I am doing PPPoE and nothing is being blocked under "access restrictions".
