    Hey all,

I purchased and installed Norton 360 over a week ago.
I have Vista Ultimate w/ all updates applied.

Well, I started having trouble w/ Virus/Spyware scans "hanging"/stalling every time I tried it.

After 2 discussions w/ their support folks, I ended simply uninstalling the program and planned to re-install.

Well, I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool software, restarted, deleted any residual Symantec/Norton files, and went to re-download my setup file from Symantec.

The Norton/Symantec download manager kept telling me there was a connection error, so I contacted Symantec AGAIN. The new guy gave me a trial download to install, in which I would simply enter my product key.

Now, the installation hangs/stalls at the LiveUpdate stage.

    WTF?!
I try to google ANYTHING on Norton 360, but there is simply nothing to be found!
I find a wealth of snippets of discussions on forums.norton.com, but every time I try to go to one of the links, the website seems to be down.

I'm literally ready to pull all my hair out over this one.
I purchased Norton b/c it had gotten great reviews and I was tired of waiting for ZoneAlarm/Zonelabs to come out w/ a Vista-compatible firewall solution.

Any idea as to what the heck is going on??

Did you uninstall via the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs or did you go straight to the removal tool? Secondly, was the removal tool specifically for Vista and Norton 360?

What I suspect is happening here is that there is still some residual left over from the uninstall that is preventing a reinstall. Secondly both Norton 360 (http://www.symantec.com/norton360/) and Vista are relatively new products and I expect not all the bugs have been ironed out in these products despite the testing that may have been conducted on the products.

Have you looked for information at the Symantec site?

Before you continue make a backup of your important files and configuration settings in case any further action results in their loss.

Can you uninstall/reinstall Liveupdate? Is there a later compatible version of Liveupdate?

Is it possible to roll back your system to before you installed Norton or to before when you had problems or some other safe point? (Note you will lose the files you created between now and the restore point unless you backed up the files).

An alternative would be to completely remove Norton and start again to reinstall the product. I would think you will need to complete this manually after applying any removal tools or uninstall. This may require removing references to Norton and Symantec in your registry - make a backup of your registry first before you modify this.

Another alternative (possibly a better solution) would be to rebuild your system from your last backup or original condition (i.e., using recovery disks) and work from there.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your reply.
I've actually been trudging along trying to come up w/ an explanation as to what was going on, when I had noticed manually that there were still 2 Symantec keys in the registry.

I deleted them, then rebooted w/ no luck.

Well, I just happened to turn ON User Account Control.....voila!
EVERYTHING I was having trouble w/ (download mgr. comm. errors, install hangs...well...haven't checked Virus scanning hangs yet) was rectified.

The install file asked if I wanted to remove a previous Norton install.
    Heck yeah! :)

That was completed, a new install was made, and I'm in the process once again of configuration.

I had long ago turned off UAC b/c those prompts were so bloody annoying.
I guess now I'll have to learn to live with them. :)

    Thanks again!
