Norton and other antivirus hosts problem

    I have Norton Anti-Virus.

However I have been unable to connect to the Live Update since I got a warning about a virus on my computer. The virus was removed but when I click LiveUpdate, I get a 'LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list' message.

In addition, I cannot go onto any of the Symantec websites. I get a 'The page cannot be displayed message'. I’m also unable to access any other antivirus vendor websites.

Someone told me to check my hosts file located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. I was told to open it with notepad and see what is in it. There were a lot of antivirus sites listed with 127.0.0.1 after them. I was told to delete them but I can't change and save the 'hosts' file - apparently it's read-only. Trying to save brings the error message that it cannot create the file. And that I should make sure the path and filename are correct.

Any ideas how to proceed? Apologies if I'm being stupid.
