It would appear that a virus of some sort got by Norton and hosed your installation of the program. I have had this happen to me. Norton is not an easy thing to remove, as it adds entries into the registry and such. Using the uninstall program feature in control panel will rid you of most of it, but not all of it. Norton has tools on their site to completlely remove the application and all its entries. Norton 2003 seems to have been an exercise in implementing the activation required in 2004 and 2005.
There are several free anti-virus programs in Major Geeks downloads and software section. All are just as good if not better than Norton, in my opinion. I personally use Avast, and it updates frequently instead of once a week, uses less resources than Norton, and provides the same protections. The new interfaces may take some getting used to, but it is worth the effort. Hope this helps! :)

I am having the same problem with NIS 2004. It shows my auto-protect off and my e-mail scanning says it is in error. My NIS icon shows, with no NAV icon appearing, and my automatic update is working. And my e-mail is also scanning.

Symantec sent me an e-mail saying to follow their instructions and re-install. Trust me I have done that and they do bury a lot of their code in the registry. Any questions on that, let me know.

Just a small rider - please make sure that there are no vestiges of Norton left in your startup menu when the computer fires up. If there is turn it off. Norton has a reputation of leaving crud behind and you will find lots of Norton and Symantec leftovers in your registry if you do a search. Best thing is to run a regcleaner program like" Reg Cleaner" which should weed out most if not all of the leftovers.
As for Avast - a TOP AV program

I just want to make a quick comment, but norton is the most bloated, piece of crap AV software out there. I paid for NAV2005 and it told me I have 3 virus' but it couldn't fix them  So I promptly got rid of it. and switched to Panda, and not only did Panda get rid of them, it found 2 virus' that Norton didn't.
sorry I just had to vent.

I'm having the same issue right now where Norton is notifying me of 4 viruses whenever I use IE, but it cannot get rid of them.
