I'm new to this site so forgive me if I'm discussing something that has already been brought up.

I know most of you are not fans of Norton. I've had it for some time without any problem until recently.

When software runs, it may scan 100 or maybe 17000 files then shuts down my laptop. I haven't been able to do a full system scan since 5/2/04.

    All updates have been installed.

Trying to find answers on Norton website is a joke.

In your opinion, could it be the software, a virus or hardware?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

That is odd, could it be power settings on your laptop? That seems obvious, but wondering. Actually, I liked Nortons 2003, though many just dislike it period, prior and the recent versions are IMHO garbage.

Viruses are so wide spread, its possible, did you try an online scanner? Our links sections lists some for you to try. Disable your anti virus before scanning though :)

    Let us know!

I just tried an online scan about 1/2 hr ago and did the same thing. Hadn't turn norton off when I did it though. Will try again with it turned off.

I'm running Win XP. When you mention power settings, is that sometime that one could/or would change?

    Thanks for you quick response.

Well, ran the Panda online with Norton off and did the same thing. Appears to be something with the laptop.

    Any suggestions?

I am currently stumped and hoping for Mastertech or Adrynalyne to help out.

When you say it turned off, do you mean completely powers down into an off state, or reboots? Only reason for the silly question is because I have customers who say things shut down, but actually mean reboot.

If you are able to, I would try an online scanner or even Nav 2003 from Safe Mode w/ Networking.

I may be a little slow in replying, I am currently painting ;)

How about trying this with all the Advanced Power options off. Disable, sleep, hibernate etc. Perhaps the system is falsely shutting down due to no keyboard/mouse activity when there is disk activity still occurring due to the scan. Maybe worth a try?

Did you already check your power options (in the control panel)? Is it set for to hibernate or shut down to save the battery? Sorry for this post if you've check this already.

Laptop is a Toshiba 1905-S301 with Windows XP. Went to Toshiba website and download their update to the BIOS. I think the BIOS installed ok. Laptop shut down at one point, which I think it was suppose to. The install goes through 6 phases of install. Not sure if that's all of them or not. Rebooted and got Windows to come back up.

Tried running the AV again and same thing. Hibernate or shut down is not active. CPU heat may be my problem. Fan is in high speed when AV is running.

    Really appreciate your assistance.

Forgot to mention when I refer to shut down, it's a complete power off.

OK... I've downloaded and extracted the software. Where do I go from here?

just thinking out of the box here....

    1. is it possible that he has an unknown really super advanced virus that as a defense mechanism shuts down when scanned?
    2. is there anyway to veiw some sort of system log to see exactly what has been happening as it probes. i mean like comands the system recieves and stuff.
    3. could norton in the process of scanning be adversly accessing a file or registry key that tells the computer to shut down?

i know we are not supposed to throw stuff out here, but considering no one really knows whats going on, i thought id just go ahead anyway

Pardon my stupidity, but when I click on sensor, there isn't anything there. Totally blank in the right window. Was I suppose to run an install, which I didn't see, or just extract the contents of the zip file, which is what I did.

yeah, my mobo dosent have a sensor, so the aida 32 sensor window is just blank for me, many laptops dont have sensors. can you feel it getting hot? i know when mine runs hot, i can feel it just by touch

It gets warm but not real hot. Although when the AV is running, the fan kicks in high and stays there until it shuts down. Air coming from the side is quit warm when this happens.

Ok.........How bout we have a go at running Scandisk, and see if it gets thru that? What do you think peoples? I think then we will be able to rule out heat problems, if if gets thru that.

Tried running clean disk. Lasted about 30 seconds before it shut down. Guess that kind of narrows it down. Will have to take it in to a repair shop and see if they can figure out what's going on .

Will let you know what I find out.

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions and assistance.
