Norton Anti Virus

Here is the problem. I have Norton Anti Virus 2005. For more than a week now, every time I try and run Live Update it poops out and the load bar freezes before it gets very far. Then, when I hit cancel, it basically stalls out. I end up having to turn the computer off, though the program advises against it, to stop the Live Update from staying frozen on the screen.

I was getting a prompt that said there was already a Live Update running (maybe the word it used was running in the background) and to let it finish. So I wrote emails for help on two occasions, still have not heard from Symatec after a week. Finally wrote the online chat guy who basically gave up and told me to reinstall Live Update. Which I did and it didn't do a thing. Still freezes at the same exact point. So I uninstalled Norton and reinstalled it. It made no difference. Live Update still freezes. And, of course, now my virus definitions are extremely old since uninstalling Norton and I get the scary red prompt saying update, but I can't because Live Update is not working for some reason.

Can anyone help with this? Please. I wouldn't think, having purchased the program, I have to pay $30 for the actual phone support they list on Symatec, but I do not see any other direct help option. And I don't want to go through the paces again with email support - assuming they ever make good on their threat to answer within 2-3 days.
