Norton Antivirus 2009 can't uninstall/reinstall

I am trying to uninstall then reinstall Norton (I am doing this as a favor for my 74 yr old mother on her computer). Whenever I try doing either one, I get the message "another installer is currently running. Please wait for it to complete and try again". I have tried finding every single file for Symantec on this computer (Windows XP) - made sure everything was set to automatically update - but when I try opening up Norton - nothing happens. I then tried using the uninstall tool - it gives me the above message. I did download Norton 2009 again - but, of course, I get the same message again. I e-mailed Symantec tech support and haven't rec'd an answer (it's been a few days). I hope I explained this clearly enough - perhaps someone can help?

 

Can you locate and kill/end symantic/Norton from task manager processes.There will be more than one. Or disable and give Add/Remove a go from control panel.

She purchased it - 1 year. I did go to task manager and it wasn't shown as a process - I also tried to uninstall from Control Panel and that didn't work. The same message "another installer is currently running....." came up.

 

Ok! I downloaded the uninstall tool at www:majorgeeks and it worked! Of course right after the restart, a blue screen came up that said the hard drive was being checked for consistency. I was beginning to think I had goofed when, after about 15 minutes, it finally started up - and now Norton is reinstalling. Thank ya'll so much for your help!! My mom says "thank you", too.
