I installed Norton Antivirus 4.0 on my pc due to lask of disk space I decided to uninstall it as a result my data cds such as Visual Studio C++ won't autostart when I put them in the drive, my music cds work fine. This all happened after I installed and uninstalled Norton. Can somone please help

I have a vague recollection that some NAV versions don't uninstall cleanly -- they leave entries in the Windows Registry that need to be removed manually.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to check Symantec's KnowledgeBase for possible uninstall instructions for that version. You can probably start here.

Not convinced that Norton is the problem despite my dislike for Symantec and their support. If your program Cd's don't auto start it may be that you have to reconfigure them to do so by going into control panel and enabling that.
Norton does not uninstall well and in my case I had to lever the bitchy remains out of the registry bit by painful bit doing a lot of backup along the way.
But for goodness sake don't run without an AV program - get a freebie like Avast

Zeroing in on the lack of disk space you mentioned, as a separate exercise.

    Load in and run

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575
    and CrapCleaner aka CCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191

if you haven't already got all 3. Use all 3, as each finds stuff the others miss. They remove index.dat if you reboot after running them. Index.dat is one of the biggest hoggers of disk space ever invented and will recreate itself to the default minimum size when you next boot up into Windows. Don't worry about deleting it, I do it every day, for years now.

All 3 are free, don't conflict with each other and really free up your PC from all the crap you inherit from Net sessions. Then do a defrag to speed up file access. Let us know how much free space is created, Bazza

Check your registry setting at this address:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies
    /Explorer/"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"

What are the numbers (or letters) after "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" ?

I'm glad that bazza picked up on the due to lack of disk space, that should be very helpful to you.
