Is this in the right forum?

As I turn on my computer and it starts loading the desktop, a little dialogue box pops up and says "Preparing to install...". A second later another dialogue box opens up on top of that one and says "Norton Antivirus does not support the repair feature. Please uninstall and reinstall".
I click it away and Norton says "all installed programs are running well".

can anyone tell me if this is normal? Should I uninstall and reinstall? Is it possible that this request comes from a malware infection that should be ignored?

    please help me, thank you.

The dialogue box is initially titled "Windows Installer" but the title changes to "Norton Antivirus 2006" as the other dialogue box pops up.

The link you gave me (which I will check out now) seems to be regarding a recently installed version of Norton. I installed mine in, I think, May. And there were no problems at the time.

I'm still going to check out the link though.

Would you be able to tell me if there is a possibility that this is malware or if this is a rather routine thing with Norton?

Thanks for your help so far.

I have the same problem. So does everyone with NAV 2006 who I have spoken to. Discussions of this issue are cropping up in many of the discussion groups I have looked at today.

It appears we all have the same problem:

Every time I try to open Microsoft WORD, the WORD splash screen appears.

I then get the error message:

    Norton AntiVirus 2006”

“Please wait while Windows configures Norton AntiVirus 2006.

I then get a second error message:

Norton AntiVirus 2006 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall.

When I click “OK” the error messages disappear and reappear. If I click “OK” again, the error messages disappear and WORD opens.

If I close WORD and attempt to open it again, the process repeats itself.

I e-mailled Symantec and was referred to a technical report that basically says uninstall & reinstall NAV (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nav.nsf/docid/2005092822170206?Open&src=con_ols_nam). There is no mention of the likely fact that (1) thousands or millions of users with NAV are experiencing the same problem, or (2) the cause of the problem is likely a faulty "Live Update" sent out over the past few days.

I will probably uninstall & reinastall NAV. Of course, that will work ONLY if Symantec realized they made a new mistake and removed the faulty Live Update. If they haven't, the problem will reoccur as soon as the reinstalled NAV Live Updates.

Yeah that's what happens to my computer except this little dialogue box doesn't pop up when I try to open Word or any other program. It comes up right when I log on to my computer, as my desktop is loading. It doesn't seem to matter much, seeing as though I can just press "OK" with no real issues. My main concern is whether or not it's malware but, from what you're saying, it doesn't sound like anything serious. Does the dialogue box present a real problem when you're working on your computer?
If it's not that big a deal and I'll probably have to wait a few days or a week or so to get an uncorrupted NAV LiveUpdate anyway, do you think it's a good idea to uninstall and reinstall after a few days?
    Thanks for your help.

Brad: It's not a terrible problem, but it is annoying.
I just did the uninstall/reinstall of NAV. Problem apparently solved. It seems that Symantec removed the offending update and when you reinstall the NAV you are back to where you were before.

By the way, the problem did interfere with some other programs of mine as well, but not since the reinstall.
