Norton Antivus - red line through it

I posted in malware with no response so I think I should have posted here. I hope it's okay to post again.

Can anyone tell me how to "turn on" my symantec antivirus. I have a red circle around the shield and a red line through it, but i'm being prompted that it is disabled. I can't for the life of me figure out how to enable it because if it click it, it doesn't show anywhere that it it off. This is worrying me so please, someone help. Thanks.

 

1. Right mouse-click on the AntiVirus icon and choose 'Enable File System Realtime Protection'.

2. Then, right mouse-click on the icon again to assure that File System Realtime Protection is enabled.

The only two options when I right click are "open symantec antivirus" and "enable auto protect". I clicked "enable auto protect" and it goes away for a second, but then the red line through it returns.
