A customer brought in a Win98 system and wanted Norton 2005 installed, he had 2000 installed and brought in both disks, as well as print-outs of his correspondence with Symantec.

    Symantec pointed him to:
Error 1325: Symshared is not a valid shortname
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...tiVirus&ver=2005&src=sg&pcode=nav&svy=&csm=no

the error occurs at about 30% on the install. Error:1325 Liveupdate is not a valid shortname. It won't allow you to continue so once you click on quit, it uninstalls everything but oddly enough Live update. I tried the solutions outlined in that document, I was wondering if anyone knew a different way to get this to work.

Thanks for your time and any help.

is this an MSI package that is being used to install?

I'm not 100% sure, but all the 1325 errors I've found on various forums and websites seem to mention that at least once. So I'd place a distinct possiblity on it.

When I double click the exe I get a pop-up saying the service is already installed. It won't let me go beyond that.

go to add/remove and see if it's listed in there.. hit remove and I believe it will ask you if you want to uninstall or repair it.. choose repair. If not, uninstall it, reboot and reinstall it with the exe you just downloaded.

I'm not seeing it, but what would it be called if it were listed?

actually, I apologize, It won't be listed in there. I'm trying to find some info on repairing the installer or removing it but I am not having much luck.

The only thing I've found and it doesn't work is the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. That was one of the links I found to repair it and get rid of my error, but it didn't seem to do either.

Try this and see if you get the same results. Completely uninstall NAV 2005 going by the instructions in the link below from Symantec Technical Support.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...88256f0e005ebecc?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

Pay special attention to section 4 (Rnav2003 removal utility) that will remove any files left over from previous versions of Norton's.

They may not have completely uninstalled NAV 2000 when they removed it, I know those older versions are bad to cause all kinds of problems when not removed properly.

Might be worth a try until you guy's find something for the installer.

I'll give it a shot. We already ran rnav2003, it was one of the first things we did. We've had a lot of norton problems come in that running rnav2003 fixed. I'll let you know if it worked or not.

I still stand by my "go to Symantec's offices with a bat" solution. I think it is a sound solution to this and future problems, I mean if everytime someone had a problem that their tech support couldn't fix went to town with a baseball bat. Tech support would improve... or the company would go under, either way works for me at this point.

Steve's solution didn't work unfortunately. Ok so here is a question, The error is 1325: Liveupdate is not a valid short file name. It won't go past that point (other tech managed to get to another point and have it error out there instead) but once you cancel and it uninstalls everything it's installed to that point, and go into the control panel. Live update is there and function (as well as it can without products to update) how can it be the error and yet still be installed? Anyone?

p.s. now taking applications for bat raiding party.

it points back to the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. I've ran that and it doesn't seem to help. Every search I do points to that or someother article that leads to the micuu, and how that fixes the problem. I'm not sure on it, perhaps...defective copy is about all I can think of at this point. Or perhaps something to do with the fact that it was upgraded from Win95 to 98. Also, I renamed the windows installer and used that installer app you posted, so I have a fresh windows installer.

eh, sort of. It actually points to an installation issue. The MIC is only a tool used to resolve that.
This one has truly got me stumped.

yeah I gave up. I called him told him it would end up costing an arm and a leg if we kept going on this and installed AVG for him. He's coming to pick it up later. The rise to any challenge part of me is disappointed, but you have give up sometimes when the cost would be too great to a customer. Considering how old the system is and how cheap you can get them now a days, he could get a new system for how much it could cost.

Do you realise that their offices wouldn't exist if everone that was pissed off with them went and done that :D

you could probaly try that program that i believe was called regseeker
and take out all the symantec/norton junk. I was getting an error on mine about the same amount through (30%) and i did that rebooted, and boom it worked. If it happens again, try that. Also, its a little late, but i would have said try that disk on another computer to rule out that side of the problem....thats my 10 cents, my 2 cents is free...
