    Hello everyone,

I've had good response on my last issue (thanks to HALO), but now, another worse issue has come about:rolleyes: , this is gonna take awhile so here goes.

Well 6 days ago an adblocking alert from norton alerted me, so I took care of it and all was well (I still think it is:confused:) I went ahead and went to download liveupdate and it wouldn't download, so I went to run a full system scan with norton antivirus it would not run.

I then went to online chat with symantec, they said to uninstall and then reinstall, to make a long story short on this one, I tried every and I mean every download link they could give me, and none of them worked at all. Ultimately last night the guy walked me through over the phone to uninstall norton internet security 2006. I tried to install but the prescan install said it failed and then gave me an error code 9999,171 COULD NOT INSTALL LIVEUPDATE It would not install no matter what I did, autofix tool to desktop icon, nothing helped. The guy tells me to go to windows and download the windows script 5.6, but it would not run either.

When I got home today I tried to see if my windows firewall was working it said "DUE TO AN UNIDENTIFIED PROBLEM WINDOWS CANNOT DISPLAY WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS", this has me worried that I don't have ANY firewall activated. All I want is to indeed MAKE SURE norton is uninstalled and then reinstall norton and go on my way

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME anyone I really don't know what to do next because everything I do results in failure to reinstall norton, and that windows firewall message has me really worried:eek:

Also on the phone the symantec rep took me through the registry keys, and a lot of this was done in safe mode

    Thanks in advance

    James

Did Norton support have you run the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)?

If not, that is where I would start. Run the SymNRT tool and then try to reinstall NIS 2006. Here is the link, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4749

Also. We have excellent anti-virus and firewall programs here at Major Geeks that are free and do just a good of job. So if you change your mind about Norton's let us know.

    Hello Matacumbie,

Yes I did try run the SymNRT tool symbol for a split-second and then nothing I did this over and over in safe mode and regular mode, over and over and over again.

Every link Symantec gave me to run failed because I couldn't run one icon or the other, the ones I could not were SYMNRT, the live update icon plus windows 5.6 download icon. I'm stuck and just about run out of options.

    I really appreciate your response!!;)

    Thanks

    Yes, Matacumbie

That is one of the links I followed and it did not work.

All of the download links I followed were Symantec links, with the exception of them telling me to go to Microsoft.com and try the Microsoft script 5.6 download which failed to run after I installed it on my desktop.

I won't list all of the links they gave me but a few of them were manual uninstall, autofix tool, uninstalling after recieving error messages, reinstalling after a failed installation or after you see error messages plus error 1316
I was able to run disc utility cleanup, msfix.bat and symmsicleanup.reg oh and I used using the Norton Install tool

    Thanks

Make sure all the .exe files on the desktop have not changed to .lnk.

    Steve

  12. quartermilerocket

    quartermilerocket Private First Class

    Ok I did that

The only one that did not have the .exe file was the fixreg.com,
which was of course a .com

The ones I tried for unistallation were as included msicuu2.exe, lusetup.exe,SymNRT.exe,and scritpen.exe

Steve you were talking just about the ones I was using for uninstallation correct? and not ALL of the desktop icons were you?

    James

  13. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

Well, any .exe file that you have on your desktop. Did you check the properties and they have an .exe extention?

I see what you mean I just checked the properties of my microsoft antispyware, ccleaner, adaware, and spybot and they all had .exe extensions but those uninstallation icons did not have an .exe extension after it not even the fixreg:confused:

    1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

    2. In the control panel, click Windows Security Center.

    3. Click Windows Firewall.

    See if it is ON.

    ALSO

I have to get off for awhile. If the file association fix does not work wait for some other replies/suggestions. I might be missing something here and we can get some other opinions.

    Good morning Steve,

Will run this when I get home from work today, a question though, it says to run from this command prompt cmd.exe and right below that is says NETSH Firewall reset. Do I type start then run and type in cmd.exe?, I know its a strange question but I'm still learning computer lingo:D gotta go

    Thanks

    Hello Steve,

Well I used the link you gave me and found out the Microsoft firewall is turned and it is working:D !!!!!! THANKYOU THANKYOU, I have used the last 2 links you gave me but not the first 1. I looked at it and tried it, the event log was already on automatic, so I tried to reinstall again.

But this time instead of asking me for my approval on the license agreement and the product key it gave me options for removal or password change, so I clicked on removal and then the cd quit running???????, so I had to take the cd out.

I didn't even try to exit all running programs or to delete temp files like the first link you gave me said to do if I "couldn't reinstall norton" (maybe I should have what do you think?).

As for the restore points I clicked on start, control panel, performance and maintence, system restore and it said I could go back to April 2, 2006, thats about 5-6 days before I noticed a problem, the only problem with that is that my last full system scan with norton and liveupdate was around mid March I think, so I don't know if there was a problem somewhere in between that time or not, I have not done the system restore yet, whats your opinion?

Steve, I'm SERIOUSLY THINKING of changing the firewall and antivirus to one of the recommended ones on this site the only downside to this is I paid $70 for it 4 months ago and I've still got 250ish days left on the subscription, I really hate to give up on reinstalling Norton but it is frustrating:(

THANKS for your help on my firewall once again

    James

    Well Steve,

I spoke too soon, 10 minutes or less ago, I deleted the temp files and my symantec shared folder and symantec file all in safe mode, then went to check on my windows firewall and it said "Security has not started or was stopped, please restart computer or start security center service" and then it went back so saying unidentified problem cannot display firewall settings, also the "change the way security center alerts me in the tool box is not highlighted" in the tool box

I just got through with running the tool again and got it to display my firewall settings, all is well now but it still says the same thing about the security issue, while I was doing this something occured that I didn't tell you, it happens randomly but it has been happening a lot this past week.

When I turn the system on and when I'm on a web page at certain times it'll say "windows installer, product software, hp photo and imaging" and it'll try to install but can't because there is no cd in the drive. We have an hp printer but this was installed about 2 years ago. Can this have an effect on anything?

    Thanks

    James

James, I was just posting to you.

Glad you got the Windows Firewall working. Good job. :)

I would definitely try that, I think that Norton's updater runs in the background all the time and deleting the temp files is a good idea also. It might help the install go right thru.

My thinking about the restore point was maybe going back to a point before you noticed a problem you would be able to remove Norton's from the the Add/Remove in the Control Panel and then run the SymNRT tool. That way you should be able to install whatever you want.

I will give you my opinion on Norton's and I have never liked "knocking" a product that someone has paid for. It does require alot of resources and it seems when it starts having problems, it really has problems. The Live Update feature seems to be one that causes the most trouble, going from what we see here at Major Geeks. It is also very hard to completely remove from your system, but you already know that after talking to support. ;)

If we can get to a point where you can go thru the complete removal process you should be able to reinstall it. I think. But, if any of these steps do work, especially the restore point if that's what you decide, remember to go thru Add/Remove first when trying to uninstall it and then use the tool.

Symantec support had you run this, I think. But try it again, Windows Installer CleanUp Utility http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

    That should stop the message.

Ok steve, I'll try to run the windows installer tool, I posted on another thread I'm having problems going anywhere on this website I can only get to the forums for some unknown reason I'll have to find the link in my papers and use it.

Hey Steve just tried the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and what a mess
after I restarted the computer, the windows installer product software garbage showed up again plus I checked my firewall settings and guess what I could not see them due to an unidentified problem.

I'll have to use that firewall reset link you gave me but even after that it still shows security has not started etc....

I think I'm going to try system restore what have I got to lose right?

    Hey Steve

I was able to get to a restore point that I think might work although when I did there was all kind of alerts that norton internet security and antivirus was not installed and needed uninstall and then reinstall, there was still that hp software mumbo jumbo , there is something on my desktop that I can't remember what it is used for xp_exe_fix I won't use it though until I do the add remove thing then symnrt tool

    stay tuned:D

When you ran the Windows Installer cleanup, did you select, "Hp Photo and Imaging", then remove it?

When you download the symnrt file, what is the file size?
Also, open explorer, click start, run, type in : explorer (press enter). Next, click on tools, folder option, click the view tab, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

    Check the extension again.

Also, what browser are you using?

Forgive me, since I simply skimmed through the 2 pages. I believe I know a way to fix this norton issue, but it is a PITA manual method.

Also, did you have NIS 2006 installed? No matter, another tools to run....

    Winsock Fix : http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4372

Ignore all the above if the restore fixed your issue......

I just want to thank you again for walking me through this thing man, I'm not that well versed in computer diagnosis and I highly respect the people that are. I've been reading at Majorgeeks for some time now and just recently joined and enjoyed the HEAVYWEIGHTS give their advice, and in my opinion you Steve, (Matacumbie) for anybody new who doesn't know, ARE A HEAVYWEIGHT .

I hope you don't experience anymore problems with Norton's, I would like to see you at least get your money's worth out of it. I would just always make sure I had a good restore point from time to time.

Glad you finally signed up. Look forward to seeing you on the board. ;)

    Thank's again,

    Hey Steve,

Don't be modest you deserve the recognition!

Everything works again fine, although I did check the windows security for kicks, it still said security has not started or was stopped etc... I'm thinking it said that because of my home network wizard setup (I'm not to well versed in that and every category was checked, my computer is strictly home use and no one will use it except me and my wife) but at least I can see my windows firewall settings, and it is off because norton has its own firewall . I did make new restore points just a while ago in case anything happens again:eek:

One othe question how does your desktop look as far as which antivirus you are running internet security etc...., I think after norton expires or I have another issue I will go to something else. Any thoughts on this?, about what I should use, as there is a ton to choose from:D

    Thanks again

    2. (Firewall) ZoneAlarm Free http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html

    3. Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1347 Beta 2 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4466

Some more here to look at. (SpyWare Blaster is good also)
