Hi, I have just updated my norton internet security 2004 to 2005 spyware version. However as usual the update took a good few hours as I had to remove every last trace of 2004 before 05 would work properly. The first machine I have done this on works fine now, but now I have installed it on another machine (different internet connection?) the antivirus supscription says its not up to date. But when you look at the subscription details everything is fine. any ideas why? it wont let me update my virus defs until i get this sorted....

    cheers

Do you have 2 copies of NIS 2005?
Trying to install 1 copy of NIS 2005 on 2 PC's is probably illegal. Check out Norton's EULA. And if so, you won't get any help here at MG. Bazza

Most often it is illegal to install the same (usually money paid) software on more than one PC. Sometimes "they" will allow you to install it on a laptop and a desktop, at the same time.
I guess "they" figure that you can't use a desktop and a laptop at the same time.

You have to read the End User Licencing Agreement (EULA) carefully. You know, that box that pops up at the start of an install, usually in CAPITAL LETTERS, that most of us don't bother to read. Some particular nasties are occasionally hidden in EULA's, like allowing the software to "phone home" to report various things, pertaining to your PC and your use of it. I have read that Lexmark even "phones home" to report your printer cartridge use. NOTFB, I reckon.

As MG take a stand against software piracy, anyone requesting advice to be able to "crack" software, or install it on more than 1 PC, will usually get a non-encouraging reply, or a pointed reply. Leave it up to you. Regards, Bazza

Norton offers a "3 License" version of their software for cheaper than it would be to buy two copies. Wonder if you could upgrade via their site?

My advice is to scrub Norton's altogether and download Zone Alarm, Avast and other free stuff from MG. Check out MG's search link. Just substitute whatever you are looking for, where the word Avast appears. The free ones you can install on any number of PC's, provided they are not used for business purposes. Bazza

PS: If it is not too late, :p ask Norton for your money back. Baz

    1st mistake.......Buying Norton anything.
2nd mistake .....Staying with Norton anything
    3rd.mistake.......Trying to pirate a copy
4th mistake.......Trying to get help for MG on pirating something.
5th mistake.......Would be, not learning form the mistakes

Concur w/bigbazza. dump Norton and take advantage of all the free software on the web and end with a win/win situation (I recommemd AVG.Kerio,Ad-aware, CCleaner, Ewido) Good Luck.

Before we all run into a legality minefield, I think we need to just take stock of what wackywelshman actually owns?

    Bazza asked the question
( or 2004 for that matter as you are upgrading them to 2005 )

Own both? two licences to NIS 2004?

Do you have 2 pcs with their own licences to NIS 2004 in which you are trying to upgrade to NIS 2005? or just 1 licence and trying to upgrade 2 PCs?

Did you purchase the new 2005 version upgrade* ( AFAIK Symantec don't offer version updates free, but do at a reduced cost for users of Norton products ) online for download?

*by this I mean you cannot get product upgrades free eg. version 2004 to version 2005, but you can get free product updates eg. 2004 v1 to 2004 v2 etc Symantec's Update Vs Upgrade info

IF you only purchased one upgrade licence then it wont work for the other PC, you will have to buy a upgrade/licence for that pc also.

Sorry Halo. Please delete my post. I would if I knew how. I didn't know all your stringent rules for posting, but I'm learning. This site is such a valuable tool to myself and I am sure, to others, that I don't want to compromise it in any way. Do tyou have a composite of the rules somewhere that I can access?

    Thanks Jack

As a former Norton user, I agree with the board. As well, when you uninstall one version and upgrade to another, there is still code buried deep within your registry. I know this because I tried to upgrade my NAV 2004 to NIS 2005 and it was a nightmare. You might want to check this. Also a license is usually designed for one machine, and you could install a free version of the other one.

Norton is the cosmopolitan of anti-virus but there are many versions that are free (check suggestions on this thread) as well as research you can do.
