Hi folks. My mother just got a new computer. I "uninstalled" two Norton items which appeared in Programs and features. No other Norton items appear there. I installed avast! Anti-virus for her.

She received an email with a PowerPoint slide presentation attached which, in other words, is a .ppt file. She emailed me and said she could not open this file and that, if she attempted to open it, she got a message saying she needed to download some program. She did not proceed because she was not familiar with the program. I immediately realized that she needed PowerPoint Viewer and installed it for her via a TeamViewer session.

But, if she tried to open the PowerPoint slide presentation by double clicking on it in her email, she would get a popup message as shown below:

I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool and ran it but still get that popup message. She was using Firefox and accessing her email with it. I tried restarting her computer but that made no difference.

Any suggestions on finally and completely eliminating Norton.

What Operating system is this? Maybe there are remnants of it trapped in the security center.

Give MGTools a run (it will not take long) This might reveal any traces that longer also.

    Using MGtools

    Attach the log here.

Also make sure that you have removed all references to Norton in msconfig. I had the same problems with a preinstalled Norton av program. after these are removed, you should have no problem.

The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. I'll post back with an update after I've tried your suggestions. Thanks.

You're welcome! Also I am sure when I give instructions to use NRT I instruct to run it twice in between a reboot.

Have you tried running CCleaner's Registry cleaner? While I hardly ever recommend it, I HAVE used it to resolve seemingly random issues that are a result of rogue/leftover Windows Registry entries. I'd say if the other suggestions don't work, it's worth a shot.

Hi mcsmc. Actually, I thought about that after I left my mother's house. I've used CCleaner for years and I agree it may be helpful in solving this problem.

I think I'll do a double run of Norton Removal Tool, as suggested by Kestrel13!, and also run CCleaner.

Today is the first time I've seen my mother's computer since I last posted here. The unwanted Norton popup is no longer appearing. I suspect her restarting the computer since my previous visit with her has resolved the problem. If that's not the reason the popup has stopped, then I'm not sure what is.
