I got a new computer in the shop today. Norton AV 2002 won't install. Once you install and reboot, a system error comes up that says norton can't initalize e-mail protection, then the welcome screen has a script error. When you move past the script error to the registration page, it has a script error and indicates that you've already registered but the next button is still greyed.

It's built by a local computer shop, it has Win 98SE, a P3 and 128MB of RAM. Two notes if they make a difference, the CMOS battery is dead/low, and it won't run windows update is what the customer has written on the work order.

I've never had this problem before so any help is much appreciated. Until then, I shall slave away at google and hope for the best. Thanks for any help.

    What is the script error?

This is the one displayed at the welcome screen.
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
    Line:11
    Char: 2
    Error: Permission denied
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\PROGRAM%20FILES\NORTON%20ANTIVIRUS\CFGWIZ.EXE/Welcome.htm

this is the one displayed at the registration page.
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
    Line:96
    Char: 2
    Error: Permission denied
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\PROGRAM%20FILES\NORTON%20ANTIVIRUS\CFGWIZ.EXE/CfgWizRoadmap.htm

I'd found something on Gateway Support saying it might be IE is outdated, but the computer has IE6 SP1 installed.

I would uninstall NAV 2002 thru Add/Remove in the control panel. Then run the Norton AntiVirus Rnav2003 Removal Tool here, http://majorgeeks.com/download3077.html

After using the Rnav Tool try to install Norton's again and see if you get the same errors.

Good luck and let us know.

I'll ask cause I'm not 100% sure. That tool won't effect Norton Cleansweep, or norton safe will it? They are installed separately, not part of a package. So I wouldn't think so but it is best to ask.

the errors are still there. We had a spare CMOS battery laying around so I replaced it, so I know that isn't part of the issue. But I didn't think it was in the first place... just hoped to have it fixed quickly. I guess I'll try to get windows update working, and see if it isn't something to do with IE.

ok, I had to use REGSVR32 to register a couple DLLs and that got windows update to work, which now that I downloaded all the security updates to IE6 SP1 I only have the welcome error, but the anti-virus works. So I guess if someone else has this problem, updating IE is the solution.

    Thanks for the help.

ok, check that. It worked the first reboot after install... now the virus scan works but it won't initalize the e-mail scanning. Or go past refreshing on the system status screen.

Norton is crap. That's all. It takes you a little while to completely get rid of but guess what?! You can never 100% uninstal. It's like a bad virus. Hides itself wherever it can and only modifying registry and few other things will get you as close as possible. They have crap support as well. I mean come on not all the computer users are that computer literate!
Bad Bad Bad. As soon as it detects that there was another version of Norton's installed previsouly it will give you hell.
As for the bundled packages, 3 month trials and such they're even more useless. Why don't you just uninstall it because seriously it cannot pick up that much and give kaspersky a.v a try or some other free that majorgeeks.com hosts for download.

I wish I could, but the customer brought it in to get Norton working. Which I now have... but my head is killing me. when the computer starts it brings up the dial-up connection (the customers only means of internet access) if I cancel I get all the errors I've been discribing, I needed to put something on it anyway so this time I connected. And all the problems went away. Anyone got an explaination for me? If it is connected to the net at startup everything is fine, if it doesn't it generates error messages. I hate Norton so....

You can disable start up internet conection, and the best thing would be to try and do a clean format because like i said not 100% of norton's crap can be gone. I don't care what programs and what who and when says; as staded previously it's a sly antivurs :) I spent half a day trying to get norton's internet security 2005 installed after having used all these programs, deleting anything that had remotely even sound like norton. No No No, the install would do just fine then it would sort of break of I'd click ok and would continue installing.
At one stage i even menaged to install it. Guess what?
Error messages a little bit like yours. Email protaction can't load this can't load or that can't load. please reinstall bla bla.
Now i love chalenges even though most of the time I end up asking for help format is not the option i usually like to take simply due to the fact of updating everything from your windowds updates, chipsets, bios, add on cards drivers. etc.
    FORMAT.
Also is the 2002 3 month trial you would get like with gigabyte mobo bundled?
If so pay him to forget about it if you have to. Seriously a big headache.

no, its a store bought copy. But now I'm turning it over to the other tech here, and hopefully he'll be able to figure it out.. if not it's my problem again tomorrow.

Thanks for the help, your solution is what I'd like to do, but then I'd have to back up his data, and reinstall his apps...which are all OLD Office 4 etc.

Unfortunately I didn't get out of it. He solved the other problem, but not this one.

I'm going to go to symantec's offices with a baseball bat, you should not need a net connection to scan a local hard drive for viruses. I think I'll call the customer and ask if it is good enough because he is switching to an always on connection, or if I could install AVG or something like that.

In case anyone wants to know when not connected:
An error has occurred in the script on this page
    Line:82
    Char:2
Error: 'null' is null or not an object
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\PROGRAM%20FILES\NORTON%20ANTIVIRUS\NAVUI.DLL/scan.htm

I tried registering NAVUI.DLL, because before you try to scan if you are not connected you get a script error but the error is permission denied.

Ahh sorry to hear that. Though he would have figured it out (maybe lazy) Anyway baseball bat won't help you heh. It very well might be that that particular copy is buggy. I tell you what why don't you do this.
    1. Delete every possible name/files that has anything to do with norton
    2. Clean it out of registry manualy
    3. Add/remove + Program files/also in hidden files c:/documentsandsettings bla bla u know the deal
    4. Reinstall the dial up conecction(completely wipe out the first one)
5.Grab a copy of windows whichever platform you may well be using and do a repair/ once done with thatyou will still have your files and stuff. Backup the programs.
    6. Now you will end up with 2 partitions one of your xp for instance and another what you call winnt.
Delete the older partition, then go My computer , right click to get its properties, click on settings to get to your startup and recovery and make sure you have unchecked the option to with the default 30 sec of displaying list of operating systems.
7.Abuse someones to get it off your chest hehe
That's all I can think of anyway, but then again there might be someone more knowledgeable to help you out.
    Good luck once again

the other tech got it working yesterday. Apparently the 7th uninstall/reinstall is the charm. Actually it was probably all the minor changes we were trying to get it to work, finally took effect at the start of the install rather than after the install. Just thought I'd let people know it is a resolved issue. :INSERT HAPPY DANCE HERE:
