I just decided to turn of the default system restore in XP since "it sucks". I don't know much about go back except that I like to use Roxio products normally. Is there anything I need to know about go back? Does it work well? Do I have to allow it to run at startup? I currently have it unchecked at startup. Thanks for any answers

From what i have experienced any backup software that you buy from a major company (roxio, norton ect) works fine and in most cases u can retain selected files. The windows one is just that a WINDOWS recovery, nothing but windows will be saved. Just dont go with anything u get from some no name company, my friend got burned real bad when he found out it was just the windows one with different graphics and interactions

On the few occasions I have had to use XP restore it has worked beautifully. My friend has also used it and it has worked beautifully after (in the case of each of us) installing a crook program.
I am also impressed with ERUNT which if I understand correctly is a bigger and more comprehensive restoral of the XP registry.
I cannot speak for Roxio but I can tell you that my last parting of the ways with Norton was their SystemWorks 2000 (when I had W98) which for numerous reasons I finally got rid of.
I am still a learner with XP but it is intuitive if somewhat intrusive but I can say thus far that as long as you back up your personal stuff then its AOk with me and I cannot see the reason for any other restoral thingos.

Whoops - an addon ERUNT available on this, the MajorGeeks Site - in addition to fully backing up Registry is has a restoral Executive and will also compact the XP registry when compacting is a necessity.

GoBack is IMO the best piece of software ever made. It has saved my butt many many times. I've been using it for years now & I've never had a problem. The program is pretty much self-explainatory & simple to use. The only thing with it is this............if you need to do a restore, it will wipe anything you have done up to that point, but you can usually restore select deleted files with the File Recovery part of it.

Get a virus? Run GoBack to a point before it was there. BAMM it's gone. Simple as that.
Bad install? Run GoBack & all is well again. It truely is a wonderful thing. lol

Like I said, Ive been using it for a long time & I've not once had it make the problem worse. It has once or twice made it impossible for me to recover a few things, but I knew that going in so it really wasn't a big deal.

Back up, Back up. Back up.

P.S. I too had a serious problem with System Works 2000 when it completely destroyed my main partition & since then I refuse to run anything with Symantec on the box, but GoBack is a wonderful program.

That 3 minute limit to edit your post can be a bit annoying at times. lol

Thanks for the replies folks. I do have system works 2003, seems ok though I probably wont use it anyhow. Go back sounds like the answer then. I had a bad install of a game and tried to use the default xp system restore, said it couldn't "restore incomplete" I tried several restore points and finally just cleaned the entire system the best that I could. I then disabled system restore, since this isn't the first time this has happened and installed system works.
