Not a valid win 32 application

Hello all, My problem is when I try to download anything to my temporary internet file. An example of the sort of message I get is as follows:- C:\Documents and settings\owner\LocalSettings\Temporary internet Files\Content.IE5\WJJZUOT9\lusetup(1).exe is not a valid win32 application.
The above was for Norton antivirus but I get simmilar whatever I try to download. I also get Error193:%1 is not a valid win32application.
I have tried searching Microsoft KB but they do not have that number, I also have had a look on this site among others and if it is here, I'm looking in the wrong place. I have windows xp sp2 installed Dell system2300 IE6 I wil be greatful if anyone can help especially if you can keep it as simple as possible for this newbie Many Thanks even if it is just for reading this far.
