Not All Use Bios Or Extensible Firmware Interface (efi)

why do Solaris, CGI, Mac computers and PowerPC not use BIOS or Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) but micro-kernel?

Also unlike PC running windows or Linux they don't make use of CMOS RAM chip or CMOS battery. If the power goes out in house you can lose every thing like settings and date and time and such.

This indicates a problem with your hardware - not the fact those systems are running other operating system.

Remember, when the computer first boots up, the initial stages of the boot process are totally unaware of the any connected drive. The hardware has no idea which operating system is installed. The BIOS is there to accommodate basic intercommunications between the major components. Without that, you could not see anything on the monitor, use the mouse or keyboard. The motherboard would not even know how to find the boot drive.

The RTC (real time clock) is on the motherboard. The date and time is set in the BIOS based on that RTC value. The RTC can user changes to the BIOS are indeed maintained in the CMOS. And that data is kept alive in the CMOS chip by the voltage supplied by the CMOS battery.

If your system is losing the date and time during a power outage, your CMOS battery is bad, and/or your motherboard is faulty!

BTW, CGI is not an OS that I am aware of. It is a category of computer software (Computer Generated Imagery).
