Hi, new here. hope this is the right forum to post this problem....have been backing up movies for awhile using dvd decryptor, fixts, and shrink... suddenly, i'm having a problem when trying to burn them...I can get a copy onto the hd, but when i try to burn it to a disk i get an error message that says that my storage is too small....it seems that i need to adjust the amount of space needed in the file size....I go to shrink press open files, (it takes forever to load)then it starts analyzing...up to eta of 7 min. It gets to 35% then the error message appears....out of memory...not enough storage space is available to process this command.... i've tried several decryptors, and one mentioned that the file area wasn't big enough... i know it's not actual storage on the hd, as i have 29.7 g of free space...so i'm assuming that it might be the space allowed per file size and i don't know how to adjust this setting or even where to look to make this adjustment....any suggestions would be helpful....this is such a frustrating problem..... thanks in advance for all suggestions

It might help to defrag - but remember a video will need twice it's size on the hard drive to burn to cd/dvd, as it has to prepare it on the hard drive.

The memory problem could well be virtual memory - -right click my computer, properties, performance,(visual effects etc:settings, advanced, virtual memory (system cache)- needs to be one and half times ram installed, unless you have 2gb ram.
It can help to set to none, and shut down and restart, then reset it to one and half times ram installed, as this clears the cache to start freshh.

Also download and install System Info for Windows (SIW) from http://www.gtopala.com/ Not available from MG, unfortunately.:cry :(

Close down the Software tab (to take less room), go to Hardware and click on System Info. In System info will be listed Swap File, Max used and In use.

Run it for a few days keeping an eye on these figures.
It will soon indicate if a bigger swap file is needed, or not.

Me, not being a heavy user, or gamer, have reduced the suggested swap file from 3 gigs (MS suggested 1½ times 2 gigs = 3gigs), to 300 megs.

I have 2 gigs of RAM, and saved over 3 gigs of hard drive space.
Your needs will be completely different to mine. ;)

I mimimise it, and keep it handy for review at any time. Hope this helps. Bazza

the shrink error message says capacity 144,504, 032 kb
    free space 42,702,032 kb

i checked the virtual mem initial size 1536
    max 3072

sorry, not the greatest when it comes to understanding the internal workings of the system

I'm not sure I understand your reply. To save me guessing, what are your figures? Please add the figures to the headings, and then we can progress further. ;)

    Swap File ..........
    Max used ..
    .........
    and In use ............

Da DA it is Bazza mate available from MGs and has been for a long time hence the 80K downloads http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4387.html ;)

    @mattbrn

How much actual RAM do you have?

Is Hibernation turned on if so turn it off as it sucks space and can cause this in DVDShrink, To turn off goto Start > Control Panel > Power options

may or may not work as converting and backing up DVDs uses alot of ram and HD space so various options may work, but the guys above and increasing your swap file may help too.

If you have over 512mb of ram then DVD shrink should be ok, but do close all other applications down to save ram.

Halo's point on switching off hibernation, is a very good point .

By your min of 1536, and max of 3072, I would estimate your Ram at 1gb ?? it would help to know, as bibazza asked.- guesswork is not the way.

If you follow bigbazza's point, (with siw )
    Swap File ..........
    Max used ...........
    and In use ...........
to see what is actually being used, by your virtual memory at the moment, and what it shows daily,or with different workloads, so that he/others may be able to advise you more.
