I have latest XP SP2 with 960MB Ram and 53GB free space on hard drive and 1438MB of virtual memory set. I am trying to install an older program (American Sign Laguage SignLink) designed for Windows 95/98/ME/2000 so I understand the virtual memory design may be different. When I try to install it fails with a msg of "Requires 3MB of virtual memory". Any way around this?

Virtual memory maximum can be set higher, to say 3mb +, if you want to try it- If it will not work then, just remember what it is before you change it, and reset to that. (generally 1 +1/2 times installed ram )
In case you have forgotten, right click My Computer, click properties, click advanced, click settings on performance, click advanced, down bottom is virtual memory(paging file), click change, and then click custom size, and set minimum to 3mb, and maximum to say, 3 +1/2 mb.

Don't forget , if you still have problems, you can ask Windows to run that program in compatabilty mode.

I would certainly set the virtual memory to (much) higher than 3 : 4MB. I'd use approximately 7 : 10% of the drives capacity (as long as you're not hurting for space). When you highlight the partition/drive, the available space is displayed. See attached photo for an example. (30 GB partition = 384 MB min, and double that for maximum.)

Or, choose the partition/drive and click "system managed size".

I have 1438MB virtual memory already and it doesn't work. Why would changing it to 3 or 1441 or anything else work? Anyway I tryed those and it still gets same error.

I also tryed different compatibility modes but still get same error. Any other ideas?

It is probably a DOS application. Right click on the installation (exe) file and choose properties, choose compatibility. put a check mark in the box under compatibility mode and choose the version of Windows the program was written for. There is also a program called DOSBox, for games, but I would try that as a last resort. I believe there is a version of the ASL program that runs on XP, but I haven't used it in years, Google might help.

Hmmm. Some sites say you need to increase your virtual memory to over 4000MB

And some say you need to decrease it.

I guess it couldn't hurt to try.

I'm wondering it the files that you really need are just Quicktime files or videos, etc. If so you should be able to get those files by Explore rather than Open on the CD while it's in the CD Drive. (To do that, open up My Computer and right click on the drive that the CD is in and select Explore.)

Also some techs believe it may be the Autorun issue. So while you're in under the Explore option, look for the Setup.exe file. Double click on it to try and install it that way so as to bypass the Autorun file.

Well, that's four other options to try.

Changing virtual memory size didn't help. Autorun never ran with the disks so I have been manually clicking setup.exe.

Did you trying manually getting the video files out? It was just a suggestion.

Anyways the last option I could tell you is what Bugballou suggested. You'll need something that will run a DOS application. I came across one the other day, if I can find it, I'll post it.
