My girlfriend went ahead an installed what she though was Windows XP on her computer. Now she is getting error messages that say "not genuine software."
She got the cd from one of her friends. Now her computer runs so slow now and she is constantly getting that error message. What would be the easiest way to fix this?

Buy an xp disk and do a clean install.

Ok,thanks for the info.I have one more quick question. On her computer, she has a bunch of stuff that she would like to save, old pics with her mom and e-mails from her mom. Her mom is deceased now, that is why she wants to save them. What would be the safest way to save all of her stuff? When I install the new version of XP,I would have to fomat her compter and that would wipe everything out, correct?

Correct....it will wipe everything ....or you could try doing a repair install and activating with the new key .....if you are worried that there is nasties (malware ) on the computer, the repair will not rid the system of those.
The only other alternative would be to slave the hard drive to another computer and copy the files and info onto a cd or other media prior to the reinstallation back to her computer and the reinstall of xp.

How would I go about getting a new key? Would saving all of her stuff to an external hard drive be ok?

Purchasing an xp disc will have a install and activation key ....you certainly could say her info to the other hard drive if you wish ...replace the drive ...install xp anew and, if you have no cd writable drive, put the hard drive back into the "other" computer as slave...recopy back to it and then put it back into her computer.

Oh....sorry ..yes, external hard drive will work quite fine.

My girlfriends computer only has one hard drive. I was going to go ut and buy an external hard drive and copy all of the things she wanted to save to that, then install a new version of XP. I was reading about Norton Ghost. I was going to buy that to copy and save all of her stuff. How is it? The only thing I do not want to save is the version of Xp that she has installed now, since it is not good. Would it let me save evrything except that?
