Not reading a HD, using Apricorn

I have a SATA HD hooked up with my Apricorn external reader, USB'd into another computer. It gives me the Compac "factory image" in complete detail. But I get an error message when trying to read the main partition. The error says "H:\ is not accessible" and "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

I would like to recover the data on this drive, also does the fact I can see the factory partition, is the HD able to be reformatted?

Are you able to run check disk on the drive?

 

I forget where Scandisk is. Is it not when you right click the HD it shows in that menue?

 

Right click the drive and you'll find it under properties>tools.

 

There hasn't been any Scandisk since Windows ME.
The program for XP and later is "CHKDSK" (Check Disk).

 

well then checkdisk, shows, I clicked it, a submenue shows, (fix errors?) I clicked "OK" and it pauses for a time then just blinks and goes away.

and the HD gives the same error as before when trying to access it.

 

It could be a problem with your reader. Do you have another SATA drive you could test it with? Or, if your mobo has SATA ports you could hook it up there as a slave drive and retrieve the data.

 

Putting the drive back in a computer with a free SATA port would be the best bet, to fully access the drive. It would appear from a distance that the external drive enclosure can't properly read the drive.
