Well lately it seems my folders and programs seem to stop responding. Like any normal folder just may crash and I would need to end task. Is there a reason this may be happening more? And is there anything I can do? I have 256 RAM so I don't think it could be that, but I know a RAM upgarde would obviously help. I'm considering it, but I've done virus scans, spyware scans, registry clean ups, defrags and countless of other things, any specific suggestions though?

Did you try "sfc /scannow" without quotes in run command to see if any files were missing or corrupt?

256k RAM is fine as long as you don't keep too many apps open or do graphics intensive things like games or photoshop

Ran the sfc scan, it just disappeared when it was done so I guess I had no problem...and no I'm not running a game or have photoshop open when I try to open the folders...

Just a suggestion. Put your puter in safe mode and run athrough scan as opposed to the regular defaut scan. It takes a while but can get at some problems. Also don't know what OS you are running but if mil or 98 you have go backs and systems restore programs Ithink so on XP as well. Good luck!

Its always a big help to list system specs, might help us help you, otherwise any tech question is very generic and gets these sort of generic answers.

    my generic answer..

Just scream at it and curse at for a while. If it still acts up, beat it with a crow-bar.

If your folders are locking up, then explorer not responding is the actual result. This can have many causes. Bad Ram, Weird file names (unlikely ..named pipes etc.. rare rare). It does sound like you might have some bad sectors on that disk.. I concur; a thorough scanning is in order. If you come back with lots of errors, then I would suggest locating a drive integrity test for your drive from the manufacturer so you can get an error code to RMA the drive (if it's under warranty). :D

Yeah I guess that's all you need....But how do I run a "athrough" scan?

Disable drive indexing. Right click on the root of your C: drive and select properties. Under General, at the bottom , uncheck the "allow indexsing service to index this drive for faster searches". You dont need this unless you search your drive all the time and it can slow performance and can makie performance slower over time as your hard drive gets more on it. I suggest people simply keep an organized drive so they know where stuff is :)

They removed that in XP, I would suggest getting tools from your hard drive manufacturer that can diagnose the drive and confirm its good. I assume you have SMART turned on under the BIOS settings?

Your list of things you have done did not mention removing startup items, there could be something in there you might not be aware is causing repeated slowdowns.

Those can be hard to diagnose, system memory, video memory, registry, could be anything.. As far as speed issue , the previous problem, have you disabled drive indexing yet?
