    Hi,

I am not sure how to describe my problem to you, but I'll try. I tried to run Malware bytes today and I put Windows Task Manager up at the same time to watch what was happening. The WTM would tell me the program was running--and then abruptly it would change to "not responding." This went on all day--I bailed out after about six hours. Malware Bytes said it had scanned for about 4 hours.

Once I have Mozilla Firefox engaged, I don't seem to have any problems being on-line--but I cannot open any documents on my computer or any programs.

I am at my wits end and I don't really know what to do.

The last thing I did before encountering this massive problem was run CCleaner and "Free Windows Registry Repair" (I've had this on the computer since forever). I thought maybe that screwed me up, so I "restored" whatever the registry cleaner removed yesterday. Maybe I used CCleaner in a way that I shouldn't have?

It did show me that I seem to be missing a boatload of registry files--but I don't know the first thing about it.

Nonetheless, a few days ago the entire computer just froze--the clock and everything. I ran malware Bytes at that time and there were no infections present.

Any thoughts on what I can do?
    Thanks.

Sorry, this is not an attempt to bump. I was just reading through some other threads and realised you'll want to know I have Windows XP with Service Pack 3 installed. I use both Mozilla firefox (4.0--don't want 5 until I can have my google toolbar) and IE 8? maybe.

I have completely forgotton how to find out how much ram and all that jazz I may have. I did manage to run Smart Defrag2.0.1.978 and I'm attaching the log from that.

Things seem faster but I don't know if everything is OK yet.

    Hi Alana

This line confuses me a touch as if you can open Mozilla which is a program .exe, and other .exes or programs don't open, then that's really weird, so could you elaborate a little so I can get my head around it more?

When did all your issues start, was it since running malwarebytes or running registry cleaners? (Ccleaner if you ran it at its default settings and didnt change any then its normally fine) all could be a coincidence so maybe a run of the below guide and posting in the malware forum area would be a good start.

But just before you do that how is your PC today, any issues and if so does booting into Safe Mode (F8 at boot, use Safe Mode with Networking as that gives you internet access) help or not?

Hi David, thanks for getting back to me!

First of all after I ran Smart defrag the computer worked beautifully most of the day yesterday(Friday). I thought my problems were solved. Then last night they started all over again.

I cannot open microsoft word 2010 files.
Going on-line is extremely difficult. (I worry I won't be able to down load or run anything from the Runandreadme file)

I cannot open a pdf file. Sorry, it comes up on the screen after about 5 minutes or so, but again, nothing in the menu bar across the top is clickable. As I mentioned, when I tried to run malware bytes, I would get "not responding" for several seconds then "running" for a few and back and forth it went for several hours.

I tried going to Windows Update and I could not get it to "open" or go there at all. After about 10 minutes later six or seven ie windows opened but nothing ever cer came up on the main part of the screen and it was not clickable. I'm currently using Mozilla Firefox to be here.

Since running the registry cleaner. I don't believe it is in default mode. I think I customised it a long time ago.

This is terrible, but I don't know how to start in safe mode.

My daughter tells me that last night she was on you tube when she paused the episode to get a snack. When she came back, the computer was "frozen"--she could not get the episode to continue playing and no documents would close. Nothing happened at all until we turned it off at the back and restarted it that way. It was very slow but she could watch her episode. However, at some point everything froze again. I attempted to work through some housecleaning and had to re-boot after changing MSConfig to "Normal start up" (I was surprised to see that it wasn't set that way!) and as I tried to reboot, the computer got stuck again at the "windows is shutting down" screen. I waited about three hours before shutting the computer off at the back (I know I shouldn't do it) and going to bed.

I'm going to do my best to work through runandread me, but the performance of the computer is completely capricious.
