Not sure if it's a driver issue or not.

I had to wipe teh computer clean and reinstall everything. Then I noticed I didn't have sound. The computer didn't even recognize that I had speakers. I found the motherboard disc and installed that...and low and behold, my computer now thinks it has sound.

Unfortunately it's delusional. :/

I ran through all the built in window help 'stuff' and nada.

I had sound before the computer wipe...and I do not use a sound card.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

 

Could you post the make and model of your PC and also your OS?

 

The computer is self-built (with help).

The motherboard is KT600-A with an AMD processor, sempron 3000+, 1.99GHz and 1.5 GB of RAM.

 

Ok, you said the PC thinks it has sound. Do you mean you have no driver problems for audio in your Device Manager?

Also check this just to be sure:
1) Is the volume on?
Double click the audio icon in the task bar to get to the Master Volume controller

2) Is the Windows audio on ?
(check through services.msc).
Go to Start>Run and type: services.msc
Scroll down the list of services until you find Windows Audio
Open up Windows Audio by double clicking
Make sure it is running, if not, click on Start.

1. Yes, Volume is on.
2. Window audio is also on.

When I went to the Control Panel, sounds and audio devices...

under the audio tab I see listed Realtek AC97 Audio. There are no error msgs.
