Not sure where to put this....

My mom has a Compaq Presario that she has had for about 11 years. The other night it was working just fine when everyone went to bed. Then when my sisters boyfriend got on it there were over 50 pop ups on the screen. Now there are a bunch of programs that we don't know where they came from. Also when it gets to the desktop it restarts itself and it does it every time. Does anyone know if this is Adware, spyware, virus? Also if you know what it is what program could get rid of it? He was working on it last night and nothing changed. So I told him I'd give it a shot today. So anyone who can help me it would be appriciated.
