Memory doesn't need to be in matching pairs. You can run a 256mb with a 512mb without any issues. Certain types of desktop RAM must be run in identical pairs (like RAMBUS or RIMM) but in notebooks, different sizes are OK; most of the time different speeds are OK too. Some older laptops that use SDRAM (144pin) may have issues if one stick is PC100 and the other is PC133, but if yours uses DDR (200pin) or DDR2 then you have no worries. :D
And it doesn't matter which stick goes in which slot, or if one is empty.....

If your laptop supports Dual Channel, the best performance would come from running two sticks of memory of the same size that supports the same timings..

You did'nt say what exact model Laptop you have?

My Toshiba Satellite has two memory slots, dual channel mode, can support 2 gb per slot
One slot is under the keyboard the other is on the bottom of laptop

  5. I believe you can go up to 2 Gb of memory on your laptop.HOPEFULLY both ram slots are easy to get to on the bottom of your laptop. It's still got lots of life left in it . Maybe even vista if you max out the memory to 2 GB!??
