Notebook Shuts Off after Boot!!

I have a Compaq 2135us presario notebook that I bought off ebay months ago. Its worked pristinely ever since the purchase, but the other day I had it on my lap and the notebook suddenly powered down unexpectedly. I attempted to repeatedly press the power button, but it wouldn't even blink. I let it sit for a day with the power cord connected and I noticed that underneith the laptop is a little slide button that releases the battery. I pulled the battery out and placed it back in, to ensure a good connection. I pressed the power button and the laptop began to power up and load windows. I got all the way up to internet explorer and the damn thing shut off again. To make a long story shot: You have to remove the battery and reinsert it in order to get it to power up, but after about 3 minutes it randomly shuts off. If you press power before removing and reinserting the battery each time, the lights wont do so much as blink. Its a strange phenomena. I also noticed that when I am able to get (briefly) into windows with the ac-adapter connected the battery indicator will say its 67% full and can last 24 minutes. However, the power led does not come on even when the adapter is connected and while in windows it continually says that it is running off the battery. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? is it just my ac-adapter? Why can't it operate off the rest of my battery if the ac-adapter is bad?

If the ac adapter is bad then your battery is probably dead and not recharging.
You could try buying a new one, but I am not sure of the price. I spent almost $50 on one for my hp.
