    Windows XP, Word 2000

Somehow, I lost Notepad so I downloaded the free one from you. When I click on Run, it asks me for a password. I've never been asked for a password before, when I download a program. Then Windows refuses to accept because I don't have a password. It's a used computer so I don't know what the previous owner used.

Something really screwy is going on with my computer. Word has gone haywire. I posted earlier about Word not saving edits but that was sorted after I made a copy of the document.

This time, I'm tryng to convert a Word document from 5x8 to 6x9. Word refuses and keeps telling me it can't do that because I have columns. There are no columns in the document.

A friend suggested Notepad but I couldn't find it.

Any suggestions on getting this computer working as it should? I've scanned with Avast and Advanced System Care. No viruses found. What else can I try?

    Thanks.

When you downloaded the notepad program was it in a .zip file? if it was, was there a readme.txt in that zip file as well? If so, the readme.txt might contain the password. If Word is screwed up you could use Wordpad or Internet Explorer to open the text file (if it exists) by right clicking on it and choosing wordpad or Internet Explorer from the "open with" portion of the menu.

Thanks, but I couldn't even get that far because Windows stopped me with an 'error' note.

I tried opening the document with IE but it just kept downloading/uploading with no speed shown or how long it would take.

Windows downloaded Zulupad but would not open because it couldn't find the icon.

Something is drastically wrong with this computer.

A friend suggested I email the file to my gmail account, but not as an attachment.

I did, and the file closed down gmail and made it unavailable.

Lavender, can you post a link to the free Notepad that you downloaded from here? This is odd to say the least. When you clicked on the download mirror to begin the download, did you then click the "Run" or the "Save" option in the dialogue box?

Could also start another download of Zulupad and see where the Target destination is.

Sorry, I've deleted Notepad. It was listed in your downloads as Programmers Notepad. I clicked Save to download it, and then Run.

I downloaded from the second of the Major Geeks download.

Did he also give you the Windows install disc?

Zulupad downloaded from the link you gave me.

First target destination was C Drive/Documents/Beta Files where I usually put programs I'm not sure I'm going to keep. The second download went into C Documents Resource file. It looks as if it opened okay but I don't know how to use it yet.

BTW, emailing and then emaling the document back showed me that Windows Notepad is hiding around somewhere.

No, and I was stilll new to computers so I didn't think to ask for one. It was owned by a company.

Tried to open Zulupad. Another failed icon message.

Considering the bugs unresolved in Zulu's forum regarding text, I don't think it's the right program for me.

I am deleting both downloads of Zulupad.

ARRGghhhh!! Would you mind running our MGTools so I can look at your system for problems?

If you are willing to do it, just download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. That would normally be the C: drive. It's ok if you can only get it on your desktop. Run the exe file and then attach the resulting C:\MGLogs.zip.

Many thanks for all your help. My XP was playing up so I'm on a new computer and Vista (shudder). I will update to Windows 7 as soon as I can afford it.
