notepad question

When I`m prompted to choose a program to open something and I choose Notepad all I get is some kind of symbols that I can`t read. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. moif

 

you are doing nothing wrong Note pad will decipher almost any file in text form weather you can understand it or if it even means anything i am not sure open a .jpg with notepad if that is the symbols you mean then you need to open with another program,
what are you trying to open?

 

You are trying to open a file or program that does not open with notepad. For instance if you try to open a picture or a mp3 with notepad you will get the same garbage that you are talking about the notepad programs opens files that end with txt.

to find out what kind of file you have and what program opens it go to the following website and type the extension of your file in the search box

the extension is whatever comes after the name of the file

file.exe or file.wpd etc etc

Just simply open it in wordpad instead, usually solves it.

I usually copy the wordpad exe from accessories in the program files directory and copy it to notepad in system directory, delete notepad and rename word pad to notepad. Much better editor, or do this with a more advanced notepad.

 

Oh ic, sorry I missed the point- Im used to opening sql php files and they format properly in word but not in notepad, sorry :|

 

Went to filext and found the e-mail attachment photo I was trying to open was MS Powerpoint. Downloaded the free viewer from MS. (pptvw16). Tryed to use it to open the photo but was informed that it was unable to perform that task. I wonder if I downloaded the correct program, seems like that should have worked. moif

 

Simply change the default program which the file opens. its quite simple, right click, change program.

Guys, I found my word pad, kinda. I prowled and dug and searched untill I found the word pad files, then I put a shortcut to it on my desk top. It's still not located in my 'accesories' or any where it use to be. When I try to open attachments from email with it, it shows this error; Word Pad has caused an error in mswrd832.cnv. Can someone PLEASE tell me what is going on and how do I fix it. Or even beter, can I fix it so my attachments or anything that I use to open in word will open in Jarte ? Or tell me something, I've been a few days now worrying with this thing and I'm ready to pull somebody's hair out ! (not mine, I just now got it grown out past my ears !) And please use non dot com language when telling me how to fix anything, I don't speak dot com.
