Hi there. I'm sorry to keep hitting you up with strange little issues, but this is what happens when you have to reinstall Windows. Even with a complete back up, personal settings and little tweaks get lost...

I work all the time in notepad, and my notepad windows on the taskbar are not all grouping/merging together as they ought to despite me having selected the option to: "always hide combine labels"

They are displaying like this which really is an annoyance for me. (See screenshot)

Two are together and open already, grouped together as should be... then next time I open up a log in the malware forum for instance... it goes off to the side!!! I don't like this behaviour. How do I fix it please? (Windows 7 64 bit)

Not going to lie, I never open numerous Notepads but on my PC I have a shortcut on my start menu and I just tried opening, opening, opening and it stacked. Possible it's how you're doing it? How about a better notepad that has tabs? Notepad is what it is, a Microsoft tool that does the job... barely.

The only reason I can think of for notepad not stacking is that you have the 32 bit notepad running (syswow64 directory) and the 64 bit notepad (system32 directory). Check Task Manager to see if all instances are of the same type (32/64 bit)

I'm thinking possibly that some of the notepad instances are launched via a 32 bit browser and others you launch from the start menu, or save the txt doc to disk and double click to launch.

Otherwise I've no further ideas at this point.

I have once tried Notepad + but I prefer bare bones notepad for some bizarre reason.

Excellent. This was JUST what the doctor ordered. Now I can get on with malware removal again with the regular "flow" to my note-padding. :-D It was exactly as you said but opposite, if you know what I mean. It nailed it and all is well again, thanks. :)

64 bit is new to me, and I KNEW it had something to do with it, just not what exactly.

Did you ever try Notepad2-mod ?

I use that as the default viewer for various types of text files like .ini and .cfg
and sometimes do minor edits with it.

    No I haven't. I'm quite stubborn.

Back to what's happening... after a reboot, my notepads don't stack properly anymore.

If you check task manager, do you see both 32 and 64 bit versions of notepad running?
Is there any pattern to the way in which notepad is being started that causes this behaviour that I may be able to reproduce?
If I can reproduce it, I'm sure I can work out what's going on.

Yes, i got 64 bit and 32 bit running in task manager, nullptr.

Patterns.. hmm... I have two untitled text files open right now which have stacked together nicely. I opened a third text file, a Hitman Pro log from the malware forum and it did NOT stack with the two untitled's...

    Thanks. :)

    Hi Kestrel

I think you can resolve this by making some adjustments to the file type Default Programs.
It looks like you are loading one version of Notepad when you start it manually, and then when you
open a log file, it follows the file type association which points to the other version.

Whichever version is the one you prefer and open manually is the one that should be set as the default
for the appropriate various file types.

Thankyou mjnc but my partner already tried this, I watched him do it. :(

Was the Hitman Pro log opened directly from your web browser? If so, which browser are you using?

I just tested with a portable version of Firefox (32 bit) and opening a txt doc directly from the browser launched the 32 bit notepad.

    Bingo, _nullptr.
I was just wondering if that can be changed through the browser Applications settings ?

It doesn't seem that that functionality is built into 32 bit browsers. You can set the path to Windows\System32\Notepad.exe, but it will just redirect to the SysWOW64\Notepad.exe.

If Kestrel13 switches to a 64-bit browser, would that not fix the stacking problem?

It should fix the stacking problem. I predominantly use one of the 64 bit Firefox based builds and it works as Kestrel would like.

Hi guys, should I be using Nightly or something? Yes I do always use Firefox, and that's where I am opening notepads (text files) from. Thanks.

You could try one of the Firefox 64 bit builds. I personally use Cyberfox x64 and I'm aware of several members here that use Pale Moon.

Nah... I'd have to set up the whole browser to look exactly how my Firefox is. I have adblockers going on to make all my pages clear and readable, shortcuts on the top of my browser... I've tweaked it too much to have to start again. I'll simply have to learn to live with my notepads not stacking. Sigh. Thanks for trying your best guys. :)

Hi Plodr, so this would make my Palemoon look exactly like my Firefox? If I used the migration tool?

Hi guys, I have a new problem relating to notepad. I noticed tonight when trying to start a thread in the malware removal forum that my jump list items have disappeared. when I hover on notepad in my start menu - usually it opens up about 10 recently used 'boiler plates' (text files) that I use here in the forum. Like the Read and Run me First introduction, Final steps when people are all clean, etc... they have all gone.

And recreating them is not an option. Usually to make them I just open up the text file I want and it then automatically appears in recent under notepad > on start bar. There's no little arrow pointing right to open up my files.... please can anyone assist with this mini nightmare? Thanks in advance.

NOTE I'm referring to normal notepad here at all times, I only installed Notepad ++ as you will see in the screenshot due to my jump list sodding off...)

Mostly, but not entirely. Pale Moon does not use the newer Autralis interface. PM has retained the earlier layout with the
menu button at the upper left. Cyberfox does use Australis and implements every Firefox update.
It's not that difficult to manually copy the necessary files from one profile to another, but the migration tool works well.

Your missing Notepad "recent documents" is probably the result of a disk cleanup tool like CCleaner or Wise Disk Cleaner, etc.
If you're using CCleaner, uncheck Recent Documents and Other Explorer MRUs under the Applications tab.
You should do the same thing with any other disk cleaner you use, if those options are available.
Jump Lists refer to something else.

We've resolved mostly everything... but Firefox defaults to the notepad in SysWOW64 no matter what we try to do to change it! If someone can rectify this, I have my jump list back AND my notepad stacking issue back in order. ;) This is all that's wrong so any help most appreciated. :)

When opening a log file from the forum, have you already tried using the right click menu to Open with -> navigate to and select the 64-bit notepad -> then check the "Always use this program..." checkbox ?

If that option is even available, it still may automatically revert.

The problem could be that a 64-bit program can or will use resources that a 32-bit program, i.e. Firefox, can't even see.

It seems that there is no way around that.
Maybe someone knows a trick using the %windir%\SysNative folder, but I have not found one.

I downloaded a portable Firefox 34.0.5 for further testing.
Go into Options -> Applications tab and there should be 2 Text document entries.
For each entry, press the drop down arrow, select 'Use other..'. Then from the Select dialog, press browse and just paste or type:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\SysNative\Notepad.exe
Press open then OK your way out. Cross your fingers.

    Hi guys! :)

It's Firefox... that's the only problem. All we need to do now is move the jump list from notepad64 to notepad32. All will be well. Thankyou very much indeed for sticking with us thru this nightmare...
