Notepad

What's the default font in XP's Notepad?

 

Mine shows Lucida Console, Regular, 10. I don't think it's been changed, but I didn't set up windows last time.

 

That's the same font, size, and style that I've got.

 

Thanks. I changed the font in one notepad file and ALL my .txt documents changed. This zapped the manual page layouts I had created. They're all fixed now.
I searched the Help indexes before posting here. Sadly, XP seems to have this info as well hidden as the eudcedit application.

 

That's because Notepad files (.txt files) don't store font information. Notepad is a text editor, not a word processor. A .txt file will appear in whatever font you have told your text editor to use.

You might consider Editor2 as a replacement. It's freeware, available at <http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer>. It won't solve your particular problem, but among other advantages, it lets you set both a monospace and a proportional font and allows you to switch between them with a keyboard shortcut. Very useful if you are using a columnar layout in a .txt file -- view those using a monospace font, and the columns will always line up as long as the page is set wide enough to avoid linewraps.

Editor2 has a bunch of other features as well that make it a much more powerful text editor than Notepad. For instance, it won't choke on a file that's larger than something like 45KB.
