I've been having some issues with an old computer and have been trying to "milk it out" for the past year or less. (AOpen MK77M II)

At first I noticed the hard drive light staying on and very slow loading of programs and such...including windows XP. I was thinking that the hard drive might be going out.

But, last night I was doing some maintenance, installing the updated drivers, running CCleaner, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, and I noticed I was getting very slow scans with the malware scanners. I was watching the time ticking away and noticed that it would jump and then pause for several seconds. BTW, I also have been noticing that when the computer goes to sleep, it tries to wake up but doesn't...the screen just flashes slightly off and on. The standby light does turn green but it continues to blink. The hard drive light flashes a few times then quits.

Anyway, this morning it was in sleep mode and I had to hard boot. I got the standard MB info to come up, it recognized the IDE's and did it's POST beep, then it just goes blank! I took out the Video card and connted the monitor directly to the motherboard, thinking maybe the card is bad but still same thing. I then disconnected the HD's, rebooted, same thing. I figured I could at least get into CMOS but it goes blank right after POST beep without getting to the point where I can hit "Delete"!

Now I'm thinking my MB is finally going out and I don't have any issue replacing it but I wanted to make sure! Is there any way to verify it's the MB? It seems to me that it must be because it has not made it to anything else...other than the CPU, which is newer than the MB (replaced along with RAM couple years back)!

I've verified all the fans are at least turning and cleaned out.

The first thing to switch is the ram for a known working stick, this is one of the most common things to go on older computers plus it's easy.

That would leave the motherboard and cpu and there's where your stuck without a compatible cpu but usually if the cpu is fault you'll get a faulty cpu beep code.

Do you have a pc speaker or one connected in your case? If not buy one and connect it, hopefully you'll get an error code.

Try a cmos reset first, disconnect from the mains, press the power button to drain all power then find the small coin shaped battery and remove for 20 sconds then replace, reconnect power and try to boot.

Look for any blown leaking capacitors on the motherboard especially round the cpu socket,if you find any either replace or junk the motherboard.

OK...I found my problem! My power supply fan wasn't turning!

About a year ago, my fan on the power supply locked up and I had an extra fan the same size and rpm so I took out the old one and replaced it with the new one. Problem was, the connector on the old fan was different in that it was configured to plug onto the power supply board itself located inside the enclosure. :cry

The new fan just a typical 3-pin connector and wouldn't connect up to the board. So, I just hung it outside the enclosure and connected it to the fan lead from the power supply itself. I tried to run it outside the enclosure along with a bundle of other wires but I couldn't get it inside the protecting plastic ring with the other wires. I just laid it across the plastic ring and screwed the metal cover back on. I suppose through time and vibration, the cover started wearing back the fan lead insulation to the point I was experiencing my issues. :(

Once I took the power supply enclosure apart, I was able this time to snap out the plastic ring, slip in the fan lead and put it all back together. Reboot and now I'm back to windows! :-D

Sorry to take up your time...I guess you could say I was working it out, out loud! Thanks for taking your time to respond, I really do appreciate everything you all at MG's does for me! Now I just need to find out why my HD is so slow (which was my original problem! :-o)
