Nothing on page...

My computer starts just fine and my Windows 98 opens fine but there is nothing on the page where the text should be. It is simply a white page.

The problem we had was an unwanted source attached itself to pages, so when we opened one, the unwanted page would open. We tried to rid the computer of them, downloading registry cleaner, advanced disc cleaner, virus scans; nothing worked ssssooooo we downloaded a web eraser. Man, did it work. The problem is, it erased all the files, good and bad.

When we start our computer we get a message telling us that system mcm: could not be found. File OLEAUT32.DLL cannot be found. I am currently using another computer, attempting to get help. We found a site with the file OLEAUT32.DLL but cannot get our pc to show anything to open it and install it...


I would prefer not to reformat as we have much on the pc and to download all the 'old' drivers for graphics and such would be excruciating, if not impossible.

I have a Pentium, 2gb harddrive, 266 Ausis motherboard, 64 bit memory. I know a new computer would be my best bet but that is not an option presently. Any ideas, short of reformatting?

Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

You could just install Windows 98 SE over itself (without formatting), and that will preserve your settings and files, however, it sounds like you have a few problems which will come back to haunt you.

Even though you say you would prefer not to, in your case, a format and reinstall is your best option.

The Windows CD should have a lot of the drivers, and the rest shouldn't be hard to track down if that is your concern.
