Nothing shows up in my computer

When I start up the computer, it boots up fine but when windows starts, sometimes nothing shows up in "My Computer" which lists 0 objects. Also sometimes, when I log in, nothing will show up and i will have to log out and log in to get everything to show up, any help would be appreciated

I am running windows 2000, pentium 4, 2.8 ghz, 512 mb ram, with all the recent window updates

 

since you said any help, here is my question, the RAM you have is it one stick of 512MB or is it more than 1 stick (2x256MB)? If you have multiple RAM sticks try using just one and see if you experience the problem again when each RAM used alone....
