    in module GDI.EXE at 0001:00001a91

Errors like this are rarely malware related. I'm moving you to the Software Forum.

Its a fair while since I had w98 but I would in the first instance close down all the applications running in the background except explorer.exe and systray and then see if Crapcleaner will do its job. If not I would be looking for a crook ram or bad contact on the ram chip(s) or an overheating problem which can occur if the box has managed over the period to accumulate a whole heap of dusty gunk into its internals.

It sounds to me like in the past you had some viruses, possibly some real nasties and deleted some files that were needed by the system but spyware programs reported them as infected and couldn't clean them so they deleted them. I had a similar problem not too long ago when I was on WinXP Pro and I found that doing a Windows Repair installation fixed all the missing .dll errors I was getting. So you might want to try that out as a last resort. I don't see anything wrong with your HijackThis log, you could clean up a few lines though that aren't malware related.

I can't seem to find the edit button... but here are the lines you can FIX in your HijackThis log. Make sure before you actually fix them, that all browser windows are closed including the one you are reading right now.

And I see you don't have any anti-virus program? You might want to try out some of the free ones provided on the site, read this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

may want to double check their HJT log as they have AVG installed.

I would be tempeted in the IE error to repair IE in win98

and even repair win98 system files using SFC
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=185836
( note you will need the original win98 cd )

    Thank you for the input.
Problems----I have no original Win98 disk.
I did try the repair from the add/remove section several times but to no avail.
Did fix/remove the things from my hijack log as suggested.
To be honest--this is my first major problem that I have encountered in a very long time.

Fixes?---I have no cd burner so I can't burn a new Win98 disk--only thing I can do is use/create floppys of a new Win98--if there is a site in order to do that, I will go there.

I find that if I try to do a copy/paste; that my computer automatically freezes when I click copy and then I have to manually shut it down and do a fresh start. So anything that needs to be copied/pasted somewhere is out of the question.
Appreciate any and all help in correcting this matter that is happening.
    Thanking you in advance.

Tried to edit previous post---timed out--my bad.
I did go to SFC and did a scan---it came back with this----setupx.dll---corupt/missing---reinstall---but as said earlier---have no original Win98 disk.
Also that was as far as it would let me go in the scan.

In SFC and W98 there are 4 options when it finds an error. You can choose to "IGNORE"and the scan will proceed. Each time SFC finds a bad file, note down the name and then click ignore. At the end you might like to google for the bad files and you may be able to download new copies. Bazza

Updating------bigbazza--thank you for that suggestion--did what you said and found 9 missing files---7 in my window system and 1 in my system32/drivers-called "portcls.sys"-which i am just going to leave alone, for i see no affects from it being missing/corupt--the other one was in a system file named WBEM--which is a part of sun java--that i had to use to download trend housecall--after which i deleted sunjava and thought i had deleted everything that came with it--so i just deleted that file. did a system check and out of the 7 in the system file--2 were not to be found--even when i goggled for them--so i just deleted them/also placed in a backup file in case they were needed. My computer is back to running as it should be. I want to thank you all who replied to this post with ideas/suggections--they were all very helpful.
Moderator---you may close this post as an accomplished post with great results.
    Thank you all

Glad it worked for you. As you found out, SFC is very helpful in W98. In fact I like it better in W98SE than in XP. Bazza
