I'm cleaning up a 98SE computer from 2000 for the parents of a long graduated college student who just want to email and do some light web browsing using dialup.
When windows boots, I get an error Microsoft Networking
"No domain server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some networkresources."
I cancel that then I get a popup password box for the college network. I also cancel that.

I've looked and haven't figured where this is starting from so I haven't been able to disable it.
I do see entries in HKLM under Network. I'm afraid to just remove those for fear that I might break a computer that is more or less working.

Any ideans on how to disable/remove this and get rid of the login for the college network from the start menu.

    I'm using 98SE right now.

If there is a shared printer in the printers list, it should be deleted, and also shared network volumes, so it doesn't try to connect to them.

Since they won't be using a network, just dial-up, I think it would be simplest remove the unneeded network stuff from the network control panel and Windows Setup in Add/Remove Programs. Leave dial-up stuff, but remove Virtual Private Networking, etc. That usually gets rid of problems like that. If you ever need them again, they usually don't get the problem back when reinstalled. I always remove as many unneeded network stuff as possible. I usually don't remove the things with green board icons (hardware adapters) or cords with plugs icons (protocols) in the Network control panel, but I usually remove all the computer icons (clients) except the needed dial-up ones. I usually make sure I can get them back before removing them (from windows CD or installation disk or download), just in case, and remove them one at a time to aid troubleshooting, but have never had a problem with it. I have removed even the dial-up ones before, and the ISP setup disk usually puts them back.

Also, I looked it up in a Windows98 book I got last Christmas and didn't find exactly the problem, but a few details:
Some of the dial-up stuff may not be needed, for instance, dial-up server, if it is in there. (Actually, there may not be any dial-up stuff there, since it is set up for network. The dial-up setup will put them there.)
From your post title, I assume you have Novelle Netware Client in the list, which can be deleted, and the NIC taken out of the case, if you want.
Windows logon will be in the Primary Network Logon menu if you delete the other stuff, such as Client for Microsoft Networks.

 I forgot to say this stuff is under Communications in the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Programs control panel. And then go through the network control panel.

Sorry to post another, but I found instructions in the book that may work if you don't want to uninstall anything:
1 Select Client for Microsoft Networks in the Networking control panel
2 Clear the check by Log on to NT domain and clear out the name of the domain (for some reason, merely unchecking the box doesn't work)
    3 reboot

These are not for exactly the same message, but for some "authenticating server for domain not found" messages relating to passwords.

Dialup is in there because this computer has been using dialup. The fellow graduated from college in 2004 and I assume that Mom and Dad have had this computer since (I could be wrong).

I don't want to delete the printer because it might be the printer they are using.
I also am not going to delete a lot of the network things, because I don't know if they have the 98SE CD.

All I want to do is stop the "looking for a network" and log in to the network" to load at startup.

The last post, looks like what I might need. I'd rather uncheck something than uninstall and discover I've broken something.

I tried to add to my post but you have to really be quick if you need to edit something.

THANKS! Just did it rebooted and those two annoying things are gone. Now to see if I need to install TweakUI to get rid of that login on the start menu.

Great! I used Tweak UI to get rid of the Logoff username command in my start menu. I unchecked the Allow Logoff box in the IE tab.
