Ok, I have a Gateway MX-6920 laptop. It just stopped working (powering up) so we bought a new battery and a AC adapter. Still did not work. So my wife took it to Best Buy and they told her the motherboard was bad. I have done a few things inside my PC like some memory and a new power supply (thanks for diagnosing Major Geeks) but never opened a laptop. Is installing a new motherboard able to be done by someone who has never seen inside a laptop? Should I take it to a professional? Should I just buy a new one?
Any thoughts, tips, advice would be GREATLY appreciated.....

And another thing... If we end up selling this and it gets fixed by someone else will all of our personal information like passwords, bank info, etc. be able to be seen?

It's not particularly easy. There are a lot of small screws and plugs inside. I replaced the AC connector inside my MX 7120 only because it was out of warranty and was useless anyways if i screwed up. I forgot to plug in the card reader but I'm not going to open it it up again as it was a nightmare the first time.

Also, a replacement motherboard ( http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/BladeC/4006126/4006126mv.shtml ) could be expensive as it is custom made for your model of laptop, as are all laptop motherboards. It may be cheaper to get a new one.

    DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!

Sorry for shouting, but replacing a laptop motherboard is very tricky, and you are currently basing this on what a $12.00/Hr salesperson (for that is all they really are) told you. The standard best buy line if they have not diagnosed a fault is "Oh, the motherboard is broken, that will be $100 for the diagnosis, please."

I recommend you take it to a reputable computer company with actual experience in your make and model of laptop and see what they say about it.

Also, you can take out the hard drive, connect via USB port to another computer and erase (not delete) your files. Eraser http://majorgeeks.com/Eraser_d4221.html

connector of the type I'm talking about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
laptops have 2.5" drives so you won't something that can accomodate that. I don't know if your hd is IDE orSATA but the one I linked to works on both types, that is one reason it is more expensive than some other models. It also accepts 3.5" drives (desktop hard drives) and 5.25" drives (CD and DVD drives/burners) and has a power supply so that the USB port doesn't have to supply the power.

Any internal drive can be removed, attached to this connector and then be attached to a USB port on another computer.
