Can anyone please tell me what might be going on?

A few weeks ago I came over here for help because suddenly icons were taking ages to load. Malware forum found nothing, and help given in this forum didn't solve it either.

Three days ago Internet suddenly became painfully slow. I rebooted and found no icons would come up at all. Eventually an error message came up: nss.exe Application Error.

I left it on hold due to Christmas but today tried to fix. Uninstalled (in safe mode) a divx package and when that didn't help went for restore point from early November. No success.

However, on going into the boot menu again (not sure of correct terminology) I chose 'Last Known Good Configuration', and not only did the icons come up but they came up quickly for first time in about 6 weeks.

However, Internet does not seem to be working. Still trying to get it going as I type (sending this from iPad).

Desktop is WinXP PC. Any ideas anyone? Thanks for any help.

P.s. Since posting, Internet working again via windows utility. Very slow, though. Any ideas?

Have just uninstalled old Javas and installed new one. Suddenly everything works much better. Could this be the solution?

Are you still getting that nss.exe Application Error? NSS is Norton Security Scan; do you have that installed?

Hi there, and many thanks for getting back to me.

I'm not currently getting the nss.exe error (since restore to an old point + updating Java yesterday), but I'm concerned that it might come back because I've had so much difficulty with slow loading of icons/slow internet etc over the last 6-8 weeks. I can't help feeling that there's something wrong.

The weird thing is that I have no Norton products installed: I avoid them. I Googled nss.exe when the message first came up and saw the link to Norton. I've certainly never installed any Norton product, but perhaps somehow something has sneaked it in?

I also got the impression that nss.exe can be linked to a virus, but NOD32 hasn't flagged anything.

Can you suggest anything that I could do to look more closely into it?

Many thanks again for helping: it's much appreciated.
