Somehow, someway, my nephew was able to get this message to occur at startup. He said he was deleting some "stuff" (obviously).

Is there any quick and easy way to fix this short of reinstalling Windows?

I tried a couple things with the repair console, no luck. Quick fix anyone?

    Replace ntldr from the CD?

Where does it go? Root level?

Is it really ntldr missing or could it be something else?

If you can get that to work let me know. I have tried that several times as well as pulling the NTLDR from the backed up service pack files and nothing has ever worked. The only fix i have found for this is a rebuild.

I don't think you'll get it to work from the cd. Try making a boot floppy from another xp machine and boot windows from it, then copy the ntdlr from the floppy to the root. take out the floppy and reboot normally.

floppy: On another machine with the same version of windows, do a FULL format of the floppy, then copy ntdlr, boot.ini, ntdetect.com. If your boot partition is the same and your system folder is named the same (windows or winnt) as your computer, then you won't have to modify the boot.ini.

Has this worked for you in past fleabus?

I found this site and did exactly what it asked to no avail.

    Nothing I did worked, the only thing I didn't try (saw it afterwards) was this;

    1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
    2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
    3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
    4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
    5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
    6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy ntdetect.com c:\

    7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

This looks promising, could have worked. I ended up reinstalling.

Sorry, would have been more specific.

I was sidetracked with real life and lost track of the thread.
