    jarcher I can't handle a title

I need to mak a bootdisk( i think)

anyway I copy the files to a floppy
3 times on three differant discs
I pull the disks out and put them in to see if the transfer took
and one disk I get a disk not formtted
and the other two are just blank

maybe my disks are just currupt or something
yes my hidden files are showing

do I just need to keep doing it one disk at a time till they show or are they not going to

my father inlaw is a dumbass
he ran easycleaner and looked for duplicate files
    and erased them, all
and he's blaming it on his 15 yo son

so when he turns on his computer he gets

so what do I do with the .iso
sve the zip to a cd?
extract it to th hhd then save it to disk?

  9. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

No, the ISO image you need to load into a CD burning program and burn it. So don't just copy the file across to the CD and burn it.

When i say load it in, i mean go to file, open, and click on the files. Most good CD authoring programs will support burning image files.

ok. .right now the .iso is in a zip file in my temp
so from there I open wmp?
and burn the .iso itself from the zip
or do i need to extract it first
    and then burn it?

  11. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    Errm, no.

WMP won't let you burn ISO files.
EasyISO is an easy way to burn ISO images quickly. You need to extract the ISO file from the zip file, then use that utility to burn that image to a CD :)

Instead of burning a boot-cd, why not just use the WinXP install cd as it is bootable ? (Have recovery console)

    jarcher I can't handle a title

    ok, its burnt, tanks

    so
    when I go to inlaws
    put in floppy
    and cd
    restart the computer
    and it should just work?

Umm, no, but you can replace the file you need for startup. :)

    then how?
how can I repplace the file
if the pc wont even boot to dos?
the only thing I get is that blahblah is missing
    restart and all black

Thats what that disc is for. It will let you gain access to the hard drive (which you can't do with a normal DOS bootdisk).

Its XP that is broken, not the entire computer, so you should be able to boot from those disks.

You will need to find a backup of NTLDR to replace it with, which you should have on a CD.

If you can somehow get a copy of NTLDR onto a drive thats accessable to the command prompt, then you can copy across using that. Personally, I'd put the file onto a CD, perhaps a waste of a CD but it would work, and copy from there to the directory required, to replace the old one.

so i could just use an old data disk thats got about ten songs on it
and copy the ntdlr onto it
and not waste a new cd?

Sure, that should work fine :)

    ok, this is what happend

I ran the cd that had the demo thing on it
    couldnt find the missing file

took me forever to get a command lne
    and when I did
    i couldnt replace the ntldr
    I could put it anywhere
    but
    c:\
    or c:\windows\system32

where the hell am I supposed to put it then?

I could only acsess the cd rom drive
I need a step by step
    sorry

    I mean when windows boots
    wich ntldr does it use
    which location?
when I put the floppy in
    and reboot I get

    free dos

    and can do nothing
how can I get to the c drive from dos?
I can only acess the cd rom drive
when i do get into dos

    so I type
    copy ntldr c:\
then i am asked if I want to replace the existing one
but if it was there I wouldnt get the

ntldr missing in the first place

and none of my floppy will format
    (yes i got new ones)

thanks fishy, but I have been there

I think the reason I am having trouble is because of the attributes
I won't be able to do anything with it today
    I'll tinker with it later

    ps
    get well soon

    jarcher I can't handle a title

    well. . everything is lost
I couldnt do anything for them

my sister inlaws ex does this stuff for a living and he took it home
and said that apparantly someone "hacked" it and erased everything

I still think it was my father inlaws dumbass. . . .

    there was nothing to recover
I couldnt access the c drive because it was cleand out

now i dont feel so bad
(and it was nothing I did)
