I know how FAT16 FAT32 and NTFS work.

But I see a lot of Videos on youtube that say if you are useing Big Drives for Storing Files use FAT32.

They say it is Safe because if anything happens to it you can get Data off it.
And you can Fix it and things like this.

    What do they mean?

How do you Fix a FAT32 that you can not Fix an NTFS?

What do you plan on using these options for.

FAT32 is universal. It is recognized by Windows, android and linux.
So if Windows doesn't "see" the drive, there is a better chance that linux will.

I own 7 Western Digital external portable hard drives. Two are 500GB, two are 1TB and 3 are 2TB. They've all come formatted FAT32. I kept them exactly the way they arrived.

I though Fat 32 was not secure.Compared to NTFS.And from what i understand Individual files on a FAT32 drive can’t be over 4 GB in size limitations.

    What videos?

The only reason to go with FAT32 is if you're using these drives on Android, Mac or Linux. Otherwise, NTFS is the better choice.

What ever works best for your specific need. Quite a number of different file systems out there today. I usually use ex-fat or NTFS at default.

Major correction to the above. I should have plugged in the drives. Head slap

The newer 7 WD drives are formatted NTFS. The very old one is the only one that is FAT32.

My sd cards and micro sd cards are formatted FAT32.

I plugged in several different items to double check.

I was wondering about those TB drives being formatted with FAT32.

You can Format the drives to Fat32 using Rufus But from what i understand it's not as secure as NTFS format.

Edit:The only real reason you would need FAT 32 is for like music. For instance if your car has a usb option to play off the USB stick. You would need to convert your usb or drive to FAt 32 for the car to be able to read it.

I left my microsd cards formatted the way they came out of the package, FAT32. I have movies and books on some of them and music as mp3s on others and can watch/read/listen in Windows, linux and android. (Two Windows 7 netbooks, one linux netbook, 2 android tablets and 4 mp3 players).
