ntldr compressed

A friend's laptop won't boot--comes up with NTLDR compressed and cycles over and over with the CTRL-ALT-DELETE. I tried using the recovery console and removing the "C" attribute, but it won't allow that. We've done the recovery thing over and over with no results other than the compressed NTLDR. Any help appreciated.

If it is another computer, even though you get the compressed message, look over this page for ntldr is missing

I'd do the "Make an ntldr boot disk" section. Maybe if you replace the compressed ntldr with a new copy, and fix the mbr it might work.

It's a Gateway 3560 laptop. We went ahead and re-installed XP. That seems to have worked... Thanks though. I'll make a note of that--might see it later.
