More problems. I still can not get XP to load. I finally got the drive formatted but every time I tried to load XP it would tell me that a file needed for instalation was missing but never what file. Now after deleting the patition and formatting again it's telling me the above. Whats NTLDR????? and again what do I do?
    Thanks guys you've been great

nope, end u8p at the same spot.
When I did that it said " The only startable position on drive 1 is already set active"
Once I reboot the computer never gets past the NTLDR thing.
The hard drive is a serial one, raid or whatever their called if that makes a difference.

I deleted the array and got past where I was. Got into windows loading then it tells me that there is no hard drive, of course. It doesn't give me the option of loading one though, it just tells me that it's done, can't go any farther. I then rebooted created an array and the process ends again at NTLDR is missing.

We really need all the info right up front.

Now knowing you have a raid array, we can accurately tell you that you must load drivers when booting off of the CD to do a clean install.

They must be on a floppy, and be:

    1. Compatible with XP.
    2. Compatible with the current RAID/SATA BIOS version.

You are prompted to load them with "F6" by the CD when first booting off of it.

Really sorry about that guys, you mean you can't read my mind
In my mind or maybe I should say head (the mind is about gone) I told you that.
I've done the F6 thing and "Xp Promise FastTrak 376/378 (tm) Controller" seems to load alright. I end up getting all the way to windows setup where it tells me I can't go any farther. I'm going through the routine again now so that I can copy the message and let you know what it says.
I've formatted the drive three times and right before the message that I can't go any farther it tells me there is another operating system in place do I want to repair (which doesn't work) or over write, which hasn't worked either.

    Uh,

Is that controller a Serial ATA controller?

    I'm thinking maybe it isn't.

And I thought Ir ead you had a SATA drive.

What motherboard or controller do you have?

The mother board is a "MSI K7N2 Delta" On the box there is the word "SATA" but a book that came with it says "Serial ATA Raid" The hard drive is a seagate serial ATA one It also says Barracuda 7200.7

    The error messages:

One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

A components file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest

SXS.DLL:Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\1386\asms\6000\MSFT\VCRTL\VCRTL.MAN" on line 11

    Hi Mgrist
Sounds like you could have a bad CD have you got another drive on that machine you can use, if not try giving the CD a good clean make sure theres no fingerprints on it

Otherwise you may find this useful

Son of a B!%@& I've been fighting and throwing and cussing for two days because my %@$@# CD rom is a POS
Well anyway thank you sir, it appears that all is working now, EXCEPT!
It says my XP Promise FastTrak 376/378 (tm) Controller has not been windows tested and will possibly cause problems either now or in the future. Do I need to worry about that???

No dont worry about it m8 Microsoft hasnt certified them thats all, they like you to use stuff they have usually been paid to approve ;)

Thanks Robo, General, Adrynalyne as always you've all been great.

BUT! One more question: I've got the MSI K7N2 Delta MB with a 3200 AMD chip but it's running at 1400 and something. I remember having to set it up in the bios to get it to run at 3200 but I'm scared ;) after this last week or two. Any of you know what I'm suppose to change so I don't have to be guessing.

It was set at 3200 before this latest debacle so I don't have any jumpers to change, just settings.
I'm on dial up also so I won't be downloading either, thanks.

I couldn't agree more, your mobo manual is a geek must-have if you're going to be tweaking your FSB & Multiplier settings. Set aside some time at 2 or 3am when you're not using the PC and download that puppy.

I guess I'm still, as always not providing the right info.
The processor speed right now at bios default is 1837 but a 3200 should be running at 2200 or something like that. What I had to do when I first set this board up was to adjust the cpu clock and the core/bus ratio to maximise the 3200 chip. When this latest stuff started I reset the bios thinking that maybe that was the problem, it wasn't, so now I've got to set it back.
I found my manual but it doesn't tell much about what I need to do. I guess there's to many chips that can go into the MB to list them all.

    Read the thread again, sSoppy.

robo was commenting on how it changes the advice we give him.

We were never told up front he had SATA or RAID or anything else.

    Just my 02
Robo and Adryn were discussing the reply Robo gave to his first post which didn't mention the Raid Array
So the response given was applicable at the time, once the correct information was posted the guys had to take a different route for troubleshooting
    Hence
The words "array" and "raid" do tend to change things, don't they?

    Makes perfect sense to me

EDIT:Ok guess you see that now :p
