In "c:\windows" I find all these "$NTUninstall" folders, it is my understanding I only need these if I want to actually "uninstall" a M$ update. Is it possible to remove (cut & paste ) these folders in to a new directory (folder) and then burn that folder to a CD for storage, thus freeing up HD space ??

These folders as you correctly ID'd hold the uninstall info for the MS hotfixes downloaded via MS Update etc, IF you have a stable PC for a while after installing these updates and if you are running short on space you can safely delete these folders ( they on average take up on a XP SP2 fully upto date PC take 700mb give or take )

Yes you can burn them to CD for backup and possible copy and pasting back to the C:\Windows folder if you need to uninstall one hotfix as they are all numbered by the KBxxxxxxxx ref for easy location.

DO NOT however delete the $hf_mig$ folder or its contents as its a reference folder for future updates.
