US and South Korean officials are playing down the possibility that it was a nuclear test.

In Washington, a state department official who asked not to be named said reports of a nuclear test appeared to be "completely unfounded".

The office of South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun told AFP news agency: "Our government information for now shows North Korea has not conducted any nuclear test.

"We are trying to confirm whether it is fireworks, a fire in mountains or an accidental explosion."

It was unlikely that North Korea would have carried out a nuclear test so close to the border with its key ally China, our correspondent says.

The United States suspects that the closed region where the blast occurred may be where the North is conducting an alleged uranium enrichment programme, our correspondent adds.

If there was a deliberate nuclear test, both SK and the US would be raising all manner of hell.. or at least a bit more then they are at the moment. It still is worrying how they are doing stuff with nukes though

With North Korea re-starting their nuclear program again, everyones a bit jumpy at which way this may go, any explosion will send panic and miss information all over the news stations.
