Not sure if this is hardware or software. I have a new Acer Aspire VN7 Black Edition with win 8.1. Whenever I boot the machine Num Lock is Off. Whenever I wake the machine Num Lock is Off. Can't seem to get it to stay on. I have done the registery edit suggested in other posts setting the keyboard option to "2" with no change. There is no bios setting for this which makes me think it is a software issue however, I have changed all of the software settings I can find with no results. Any ideas?

    Try this Power Plan modification.
Enable Num Lock on startup or reboot in Windows 8 / 7

If that does not work ....

This is what worked for me with Windows 7 Home Premium.
Something kept resetting the registry value back to zero.
Maybe the same is happening with yours ??

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

    InitialKeyboardIndicators REG_SZ Number

The procedure below kept the value set at 2.
Be sure you make appropriate backups before making these changes.

    =========================================
    Default: 0
1 is nothing, 2 is on.
    =========================================

If Windows alters the value of the 'InitialKeyboardIndicators' value it means
that you have placed an incorrect lock on the 'Keyboard' key.

After setting the 'InitialKeyboardIndicators' value right-click the 'Keyboard' key.

Next click 'Permissions...' (NOTE: The 'Permissions for Keyboard' Window should Appear.)

In the section titled 'Permissions for RESTRICTED' click the button labelled
'Advanced.' (NOTE: The 'Advanced Security Settings for Keyboard' Window should
    Appear.)

In the list box titled 'Permission entries:' there should be at least four
lines of data. Look at the column of data headed: Name.

    Select the top-most entry of the form: <Your Name>(<Computer Name>\<Your Name>).

Click the button labelled 'Edit...' located beneath the list box. (NOTE: The
'Permission Entry for Keyboard' Window should Appear.)

In the list box titled 'Permissions:' there should be an entry named: Set Value.

This value should have two check boxes to its right. Set the right-most check box. Click: OK. Click: Apply OK.
    Repeat the last step.

The power plan setting makes no difference that I can see either way. Both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_USER.DEFAULT have the keyboard set to 2 and have not changed for a couple of days however, after a restart the num lock is on after a cold start or return from sleep the num lock is off.

    Try these directions
This was posted as being good on a cold boot but not a restart.

According to another post related to Windows 8, the InitialKeyboardIndicators value must be a DWORD (32 bit value).
Delete the REG_SZ entry and create a new DWORD entry with value 2.

Deleting the REG_SZ and adding a DWORD did not work. It changed back to a REG_SZ and the DWORD was gone. I changed the value from 2 to 80000002 as suggested and so far after a cold boot and a restart the num lock has stayed on still need to let the computer go to sleep and see what it does when it wakes up.

Just came back to the computer after about 3 hours. Moved the mouse and logged back in. Num Lock was off.

I suspect this is as good as it is going to get.

Some computers just don't do what we want. I had 5 laptops/netbooks.
Despite all kinds of trial and error 2 of the 5 refused to keep the touchpad off on a cold boot. I always have a mouse plugged in. For those two, I knew I had to turn the touchpad off every time I cold booted.

You are probably right. Unfortunately the large computer companys and microsux think they know what is best for us and have taken those decisions away from us like the windows 8 and now 10 desktop.
