number of running processes

When running ad-aware in the summary section it tells me I have 32 running processes. What processes is it refering to? Also 32 sounds like a lot... is that a high number? If so how do I go about finding out what they are and shuting down the unnecessary ones?

hit Ctrl-Alt-Dlt to bring up Task Manager and click on the Processes tab

If you click on the Show Logfile button, it will give you the list of all processes running. Some will be obvious as to what they are and some will not. You can search the web and places like these:

to get info on most of the other process. You can also click Start, Run, and then enter and run msconfig. Then click the Startup tab. This will give a list of all the process you are loading at startup. You will see the same programs that Ad-aware was referring to.
Be careful on what you decide to shutdown. Do some research first!!! Some of the processes are going to be required for your OS. By the way you did mention which OS you are running. By the way, CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up the Task Manager and you can see the processes too.
