Somehow my NumLk key was enabled and with purely playing with keyboard I managed to turn it off. But the next day it was back on but I still managed to turn it off again. Today it was on again and I THINK that Fn-shift-ScrLK turned it off but I can't understand why it keeps returning (and then I have to friddle around, trying to turn it off because I didn't make a note of the correct shortcut keys.

So, please can you confirm the correct key combination and PLEASE tell me why it keeps returning and what I can do about it!

    Hello
Numlock can be turned on and off by using the numlock key. If your puter fires up and turns it on thats the way the puter is programmed to start. In days gone by it was enabled in the startup by an instruction in the win.ini file if I remember correctly. Not sure what turns it on at startup by default in the more modern OS's but if you don't want it off just press the numlock key on your KB to turn it off. I think the majority personal preference is to leave it ON rather than OFF but thats up to you.
    Cheers

like it was said b4, most people just leave it on.

On bootup, press the Function key (F2?), (or Delete key, or whatever) that allows you to access the computer BIOS setup. Go through and read each screen carefully. In one of them there should be the option to boot up with Numlock on, or off. You can alter it there. Make sure that you "Exit and Save changes" when you are finished. Are you using a laptop by any chance, or a desktop? Bazza

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will look at the Bios but as the problem occurs at random intervals I am not sure that it's that (illogical isn't it?).

One thing is certain, IT CANNOT BE LEFT ON! The reason is simple - it turns some letter keys into numbers! Th5s 5s a de06nstrat56n. See what 0ea+?

It looks as if the keyboard shortcut Alt-shift-NumLck toggles it on or off but I have no idea why it keeps changing!

    Thought so. :D
I'm checking for one of my earlier replies to the same problem.
In the meantime, read the manuals that came with your laptop.
On my Gateway laptop, pressing the Fn key (green coloured text, on a special key) + Function key F9 (with Pad Lock written in green on it), turns the numbers ON and OFF.

Look at every key on your laptop keyboard and you will probably see something similar. Different manufacturers use different key markings and key combinations.

I would recommend plugging in a normal keyboard whenever you are using your laptop from a fixed position, ie., at home. A hell of a lot more convenient.
Then you can just press the NumLock key, on and off, however you like it.

If you still can't find the correct combination of keys, let me know and I will chase up my old thread posts. Bazza
