In Advanced BIOS Features with the option Boot Up NumLock Status I have mine set to ON however when I boot up Num Lock is not on. It does not come on until I have logged into my User Account. It has only been doing this for the last two days. I would certainly have noticed sooner because I have a password to get into my User Account and that password contains numbers and when entering numbers my preference is to use the numbers on the left rather than those along the top of the keyboard.

On the left? mine are on the right. try going into the bios and reset defaults then go thru and redo all your settings. Check your keyboards connection on the back of the PC make sure it didn't wiggle loose. I have one of those usb into a PS/2 adapter that sticks out pretty far and can work its way down and needs reseating on occassion.

OK so don't know my left from my right, mine are on the right too. Will set BIOS settings to default. Keyboard is wireless anyway.

I have reset BIOS to defaults and the problem persists. What can I try to do now?

is there an option in your bios for usb legacy support? (im assuming the wireless keyboard is usb) or something about turning on usb keyboards in the bios?

There is an option to have a USB Keyboard enabled (or not). It was already set to enabled.

Try plugging your keyboards reciever into other ports and see what happens. I have a wireless xbox360 controller for playing PC games. Its really finicy and will not funtion on any usb connection that has other stuff on it. While researching how to solve the problem I saw some had good luck by adding a usb hub that had its own power source (plugged to the wall) and then their controller worked. What I did was to add a pci usb2.0 card to the machine and connected the controllers reciever to that all by itself and then it worked correctly. You could be having a similar problem. If you unplug all other usb devices from your pc, and then the keyboard works correctly, then you know it doesn't play nice with other devices on the same line just like my controller.

Reviving an OOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDD thread... Very similar problem:

My old XPH-SP3 system crashed recently, so I'm in the process of reinstalling XPP onto another HDD in the same box. I've done most of the updates now, and installed some 3rd-party software (mosly DLed from here or MS). I use the same old wired MS PS2 keyboard (with built-in USB hub that requires a separate & independent USB connection) that I always have, and it has never exhibited this behavior.

I didn't change any BIOS settings after the crash, but I checked it a few times & didn't see anything about NumLock or legacy keyboards. During POST, the NumLock light always comes on. Shortly after the WinXPP splash screen appears & the progress bar makes a pass or 2, the light goes off. Pressing it then does NOT turn it back on. I have to wait until the desktop splash screen goes away & the logon Welcome screen appears before NumLock will lock again.

Did I screw something up? Or could this be a result of some software or update? I don't know exactly when it happened because I began using the Admin account (naturally) immediately after installing, and I did several updates (including SP2 & SP3) before creating my own account with numbers in the PW. I don't have a LOT of software installed, so I can post a list if it'll help. I also use some non-installed software (like BGInfo) that's active during POST.

    BTW
How do I get back to the "Administrator" account??? Now that I have other accounts, "Administrator" doesn't appear on the welcome screen. I think it would reappear if I deleted all the other accounts, but now that I've put some effort into setting them up, I'd like to hold off on that as a last resort.

Missed the $*&%^ edit time by a couple of seconds again!!!!

During the splash screen, all 3 lights come on & go off.

No solutions? Seems like there ought to be a way to stop Windows from cycling the keyboard locks. So far my workaround is: don't restart.

Windows xp will remember what state numlock is in from the last logoff/shutdown. My guess is there's a time during login when it checks this. Aside from that, I've got nothing else for ya. There's sometimes an option in the bios to have numlock on or off during boot. Have you tried to just leave it alone, until the welcome screen comes back? I can't understand if you've tried that or not, you say you see the light go off, and you try to press the button and nothing works for a few seconds.

as for the administrator account, try the control/alt/delete combo twice when at the welcome screen to bring up the traditional username/password window. there you should be able to type Administrator as the user name, then password. The only time you should see the administrator login option on the welcome screen is when booting into safe mode.
